RIP Seattle’s Gum Wall

photo cred | Flickr

In the saddest piece of news that I’ve read all week, the Seattle gum wall in Post Alley next to Pike Place is coming down! First off, two decades worth of chewed up spit up gum is up on this wall and while some people find it to be completely disgusting, guess what – I don’t hate it. Not one bit. I still take every person that has ever visited me in Seattle to this place because I think it’s fantastic. Why the city would want to clean this thing up is beyond me. They should probably worry about the random poo poo on the streets instead of this.

The sticky spread currently spans 54 feet and climbs eight feet high up the alley wall—there’s an estimated 150 pieces of gum per brick, and over one million wads total. It’s a collection 20 years in the making, started by audience members waiting in line for improv shows at the Market Theater.

The cleaning will start sometime this week and is expected to last a couple of days. Yeah, there’s THAT much gum on it. I wonder if people will start throwing up their gum after the cleaning. It’s what I would do. This thing is an icon.

Wedding Mondays

[vimeo http://vimeo.com/71373301]

It’s pretty tough to keep up with Wedding Mondays y’all. If the wedding blogs that I frequently read aren’t showcasing any videos for me to become obsessed with at the time, the queue for Wedding Mondays becomes very very small. I’m down to my last one, right now! But that just means I have to do a little bit more searching. This video is perfect for today especially since I’ve been a little homesick for Seattle. I love Danielle and Jonathan’s ceremony in Post Alley at Pike Place Market! The entire look and feel of their wedding seems very personal and while I don’t know them at all – probably is true for their personalities as well.

Also, look at that crowd! How fun would it be to witness something like that as a tourist?

If you thought the video was amazing, take a look at their photos here on their feature at Green Wedding Shoes.

Life as a Seattelite

“You have to be a tourist in your city at least once.” – Jeanette

A couple of weeks ago, Jeanette approached me about her idea of touring Seattle and spending the day becoming re-acqainted with the great spots in our city. She said that the last time she took a trip to Pike Place Market was so long ago and she had also wanted to see the Fremont Troll. I also wanted to share some of my favorite places with her too, so I lead her down Post Alley to the gum wall, Gas Works park, and downtown Fremont.

We had the most amazing day traveling all over the city, taking pictures and getting lost every second of the way.

The first set of pictures are just from something I created titled, “Life as a Seattelite.” Jeanette’s pictures are also used in this post.

It’s not every day that you see a film crew and with the most adorable kids.
