Sasquatch Music Festival Ends Its Run

photo cred | Rad Season

This is the first of two posts that I’m writing today that will bum the both of us out! I first learned that Sasquatch Music Festival would be ceasing its operations at the end of June, but I couldn’t bring myself to write about it on Yow Yow! Every year, I continued to be impressed with the lineup and there was never a shortage of stories from my friends coming back from the festival. As much as I had loved the lineup, I wasn’t a big camper and most of the time opted out for other plans. If you’ve ever been to the Gorge though, then you know it’s an incredible venue with even more spectacular views. That’s why it makes it even more difficult to share the news that the festival is ending after 17 years.

In a June 28th email announcement, founder Adam Zacks shared that Sasquatch will not be returning in 2019, but thanking all that were involved with making it as memorable as it has been. It was rumored that Sasquatch had seen a decline in the last couple of years as have many other festivals in 2018. Earlier this year, FYF Fest had canceled their entire festival shortly after announcing their lineup due to low ticket sales.

Though I never attended the festival myself, Adam was someone that I looked up to when I had spent some time booking. I admired his work and he truly did great things for the music community in Seattle. It’s a shame to see Sasquatch go, but I hope this isn’t the end for Adam and I’m looking forward to hearing what he does next. For his full statement on wrapping up the festival, click [here.]

The Great Caravan: Sasquatch! 2012

I once heard it described perfectly by a man dressed in neon swim trunks and a Native American headdress – “it’s the one weekend of the year where I just don’t care.” I couldn’t have said it better myself, shirtless man in feathers. He was talking about Sasquatch! Music Festival, the event which takes place every Memorial Day Weekend in what is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places on the planet – the Gorge in George, Washington. People from all over the Pacific Northwest and beyond pack their Subaru Foresters with good friends and camping supplies. As 5-time festival-goer, it’s where I truly feel I can be myself – dance like no one’s watching (even though a lot are), belt out indie jams like I have the best voice in the world (even though I very much don’t), and make some lasting memories with people I love dearly.

The following is a play-by-play of Sasquatch 2012 from the eyes and ears of Lucas Ruiz. Here, ladies and gentlemen, are some moments I found particularly noteworthy:

Beat Connection – The Palace Garden, 4am

Beat Connection has always been a group that has been so-so to me. They’re great. Their music is awesome. They get buzz in Seattle press all the time, but I was waiting for some kind of “connection” (seriously, no pun intended) to happen. It wasn’t until I heard this song and had in on repeat for a whole evening that I finally reached that “aha!” moment. Okay. Beat Connection. I get you.

Congratulations to these guys who played Sasquatch for the first time this year!

Parental Career Involvement

In the new cover story for SPIN, hip hop group member, Ashok “Dap” Kondabolu of Das Racist, recalls the story of how he brought along his two parents to this year’s Sasquatch Music Festival in Washington where he was performing. When Kondabolu realized that he would not be able to celebrate his father’s birthday because of this performance, he brought the party to him. So did the parents get down in George, Washington. You know it.

Read the rest of the cover story here.

Well, this story is kind of precious. I briefly skimmed it, but am loving the fact that these two artists were able to share this experience with their parents. This is something that I kind of love doing with my own parents even though I’m sure they don’t enjoy my concerts or the music I listen to – it’s still important to me that they understand what it is that I do or why I love doing it. Someday, they’ll be able to take advantage of those benefits, but for now I’ll just string them along like Das Racist does with theirs.
