School Dress Codes

Growing up, I never attended a school where I was restricted to a certain dress code. Don’t get me wrong, I adore the plaid skirts and the button up blouses, but having gone through my educational years w/o it, I’m not exactly begging for a dress code now. Let’s not be silly though because that would be down right ridiculous to have a dress code in college. Maybe this is a biased opinion, but I don’t find that having a dress code causes less distractions for students while in school. Unless these kids are coming to school dressed like sparkly Michael Jackson and Madonna circa 80’s every single day then I don’t see what the problem is.

I think that developing your own sense of style helps you discover who you are. It teaches you to be more comfortable with yourself and allows you to take risks.

I always thought that this phase would fade out. Instead, it’s just gotten worse. Yesterday, a school board in Scranton, PA announced that their new dress code for the following school year would ban skinny jeans, hoodies, and cargo pants. If your students want to become hipsters, just let them be!

That’s not all…the board decided unanimously to ban yoga pants, tops w/ zippers, tank tops, hats, shorts that are more than three inches above the knee and clothing that is a size too tight.

I have no other words…
