Capitol Hill Block Party 2019

It’s crazy just how much time has passed since I went to my last Capitol Hill Block Party. Since I was living in Seattle, this was the event I looked forward to the most in the summer. It also didn’t hurt that I was just a hop and skip away from the actual festivities. It’s amazing to see how much this festival has grown and the fact that I now have friends that work on this production! If you’re thinking about becoming a first time goer, I would highly recommend it.

Sub Pop’s Branded Airplane

I love hanging out at Sea-Tac Airport – maybe to an unhealthy extent. If I’m getting dropped off, I go early so that I can have dinner at one of my favorite local spots or shop at the Sub Pop store before heading home. Local vibes are everywhere at the airport and it’s one of the things that I love. Known for being a city with a famous music scene, there is no shortage of love for the community there. The Sub Pop store is easily the best last stop on your way out as you can pick up some great merch – records, tees, etc. You’ll even hear some of Sub Pop’s local artists overhead as you’re walking through the airport.

Now, the record label is taking over the skies! It was just announced today that they’ve got their own branded Boeing 737-800.

“The jet’s wrapping makes it look like a Sub Pop musician’s instrument case, only in much better condition,” Sub Pop co-president and founder Jonathan Poneman said in a statement. “It’s definitely the sickest jet on the tarmac!” Alaska Airlines’ managing director of brand marketing and advertising Natalie Bowman added, “This partnership brings together two independent, local brands that are committed to doing things a little differently.”

Kamonegi in Seattle

These days when I return home to Seattle, I have a habit of retreating into my parent’s house and pretty much never leaving. Since I have to go most of the year without my mom’s home cooking, it’s all I ever want to have when I’m visiting. What is it that will get me out of the house though? When my friends introduce me to new Seattle restaurants highlighting my favorite comfort foods. Winny nailed this one on the head by bringing me to a recently opened soba noodle soup restaurant called Kamonegi and it was a dream! We started off with a small plate of Shishito peppers followed by duck meatballs with a side of a soft egg before getting into our entrees.

Is there anything more you could want than a hot soba noodle soup bowl in the winter time? The flavors together were amazing and came with a juicy and tender piece of duck that only elevated the taste of the soup. By the end of it, I’m sure Winny and I could have both had a second bowl each.

To top things off, we treated ourselves to a lemon-y dessert resembling a pudding type texture or brulee. It was the perfect ending to our fantastic meal and night!

Minus the Bear Have Broken Up

photo cred | Chona Kasinger

And yes, my heart is pretty much broken. The first text that I wake up to should never have to be about one of my favorite bands breaking up, but that was this morning for me. Minus the Bear is my youth. Growing up, I probably had a much stronger attachment to songs and bands than the average teenager, but that was just who I was – overly passionate. When I discovered “Pachuca Sunrise” it was kind of like a glass shattering experience for me. From then on, I never let go of Minus the Bear. I went to a handful of their concerts and when it came time for me to organize one of my most important shows, I even tried to reach out to them. It was a life goal of mine, even at 16, to try and book Minus the Bear. I still remember the moment where my mentor had thought that I was being a little ambitious, but encouraged me to try anyways.

All that said, I can’t say that I’m surprised. These guys have been around for so long and now it’s time for them to live out their lives with their families. They will surely be missed. 17 years is quite a run to be proud of and their legacy will continue to live on in their six albums. To say farewell to all of their fans, the band will be doing one last tour kicking off on October 9th. I have no idea how to end this post other than that I’ll be listening to Planet of Ice and Menos El Oso the rest of the night. Goodbye.

Bumbershoot 2018

I have left this poster up on my tabs this week not only as a reminder to post it to Yow Yow! but because it is so beautiful! The colors!! Oh my goodness, everyone knows that I have a major soft spot for this music festival because in a way, it sort of helped shape my youth. This was the event that I looked forward to every summer, more than Capitol Hill Block Party (early on at least) more than Seafair (because that has never been my thing ever) and more than the Bite of Seattle. Bumbershoot has always been a family friendly music festival that brings musical and comedy acts from all over the world into one place. There is also a huge emphasis on local acts. This year, I’m especially excited to see Portugal. The Man so high up on this lineup.

Yow Yow’s Top 10 Posts of 2017

It isn’t hard to push out a post when I need to. They can range from anything to a YouTube video to a song on Spotify or a quote against a printed background in an interesting typeface on Pinterest. While I like to think that varying lengths of posts make Yow Yow! really interesting, it’s those essays that I spend the most time on that I’m proud of. 2017 was a year of changes not only for me personally, but for Yow Yow! There was a lot happening in the world that I wanted to share an opinion about and I’ll admit, I don’t always get it right. I’ve received some criticism over the last year for some of the pieces that I’ve written, which challenged me, but I also received positive feedback as well. Overall, it felt like a step in the right direction. As much as I love writing about food, music, and fashion, I can’t let Yow Yow! only be about that. And the reason why is just because that’s not what I’m only all about. Thank you all for letting me stretch my creativity with this and for continuing to stick with us.

SPiN Comes to Downtown Seattle

This December, ping pong social destination, SPiN will be expanding to a prime location in downtown Seattle, Washington. SPiN, originally from New York is a place where friends can gather together to play ping pong in a more social setting.

SPiN Seattle will open its doors at 1511 6th Avenue and will occupy nearly 10,000 lower level square feet of the historic Decatur Building. Originally built in the 1920’s, this Seattle landmark will offer tournaments, monthly programming, private lessons, corporate parties and casual play.

“SPiN’s culture inspires and connects people through ping-pong while celebrating creativity, diversity and inclusivity.” Says SPiN CEO, Pieter Vanermen. “We chose Seattle as the next city because of its rich culture, technological innovation and a growing community devoted to originality that aligns with the SPiN brand. We are absolutely thrilled to launch and invite the public to come witness what SPiN is all about.”

Designed by the architectural firm, Barker/Nestor, the new Seattle location will be a mecca and playground for all ages. The newest location will offer 12 Olympic-style ping pong tables, private lounge spaces and a full-service restaurant and bar that can accommodate anywhere from a few people to 300 guests. The space includes the perfect setting for intimate connecting thanks to plush lounge seating and extraordinary art features-perfect for any celebration or group activity.

If you’re looking for a spot to host your next party or outing, this will be it. There’s also a SPiN location here in San Francisco and this post is reminding me that I still need to check it out myself!
