Rubina Ali writes her own memoir

I don’t think the Slumdog Millionaire child stars could ever stop amazing me. These kids have gone through so much in their lives. The movie brought them great success, but nonetheless they are still living in the slums. Recently, the young star who plays young Latika in the movie had her home demolished by authorities in India. However, on July 16th, she will be releasing her memoir in the UK and the United States.

A statement from publishers TransWorld promises, “(Ali) tells her own incredible story, from playing marbles with her friends beside the sewers of Garib Nagar in Mumbai, to dancing along to the Bollywood films she and her family watch on their old television se

Slumdog Child Star’s father offers to sell his daughter

I feel like everything I have read about the kids in Slumdog Millionaire have all been bad news. This is all so sad.

The poverty-stricken father of Slumdog Millionaire star Rubina Ali has offered to sell her for £200,000, it has been claimed.

Rafiq Qureshi, who lives in a one of India’s worst slums in the city of Mumbai, reportedly attempted to make an illegal adoption deal for the nine-year-old girl.

“We are considering Rubina’s future,” Mr Qureshi is alleged to have told a man posing as a prospective buyer.

We’ve got nothing out of this film. They haven’t looked after us. They gave some money at the start, but they gave nothing afterwards. They gave us around 150,000 rupees (£2,000).

“They’ve been talking about giving us a house, but all they do is talk.”

He referred the caller to his brother-in-law, Rajan More, who said: “Rubina’s life is miserable and she lives here with her stepmother. Most of the time she stays with me because she is not happy at her parents’ home.

“Obviously if you wanted to adopt, we could discuss this, but her parents would expect some proper compensation in return. We are talking around £50,000 for this to happen.”

However at a subsequent meeting the price was said to have risen to £200,000.

His brother Mohiuddin was quoted as saying: “The child is special now. This is not an ordinary child. This is an Oscar child.

Slumdog Millionaire, which tells how one of India’s poorest, a ‘slumdog’, wins the Indian version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire, has taken £185 million at box offices worldwide.

Mr Qureshi said he had only been given a small amount of money despite the success of the film.

He added: “What they showed in the film is exactly how life is here. The government doesn’t help us. We get nothing.

“We live in one room, seven of us sleep on the floor. I earn £2 to £3 a day. I have to consider what is best for me, my family and for Rubina’s future.”

——Personally, I don’t even know what to think about this article.

Slum Sadness continues

It’s already bad enough to hear the news that the child actors from Slumdog Millionaire live in devestating poverty. We felt a little bit better when Danny Boyle said that he was going to purchase houses/apartments for them and their families. But I have a sinking and unsettling feeling when I hear that one of that young actors was struck by his own father. And it doesn’t help that there are pictures.

Slumdog Sweeps Oscars

If you haven’t seen the movie, go watch it. Although I wasn’t able to watch the Oscars myself, I hear Slumdog did very well and I have to agree it was very much deserved. I’m still so in love with this movie and I plan on watching it again when I go home. 8 out of 10 Oscars? Not bad. Not bad at all.

Freida Pinto is a Slumdog Superstar

I haven’t been able to stop raving about Slumdog Millionaire. If you haven’t seen this movie, you need to. It is so wonderful and refreshing. Last night the movie took home four awards from the 2009 Golden Globes: Best Motion Picture – Drama Best Director – Motion Picture (Danny Boyle), Best Screen Play – Motion Picture (Simon Beaufoy) and Best Original Score – Motion Picture (A.R. Rahman) The awards were all well deserved I’m not surprised at all. And it’s obvious that Freida herself – who made her debut in Slumdog as Latika – has been mentioned almost everywhere I have seen today as one of the “Best Dressed,” wearing Christian Lacroix. I don’t think the hype will be over anytime soon; I’m so excited to see what’s in store for Slumdog’s main characters Dev Patel and Freida Pinto. I think Freida has been looking radiant lately in her red carpet wear, she’s giving my all time favorite style icon Camilla Belle a run for her money.
