Out on the Town: 12/7

This is our first “Out on the Town” post since I moved to the Bay Area so I am thrilled to share with you that Lissie will be performing in San Francisco this coming Saturday, December 7th at The Independent.

Doors: 8:30 PM

Show: 9:00PM

21+

TIckets are between $18-$20 and can be bought here. We heard that this show is possibly sold out, but readers – she’ll also be in Seattle this Thursday, December 5th at The Crocodile. If you have a chance, be sure to purchase your tickets here.

I’ve actually been a fan of Lissie’s for years and as a booker in Seattle, she was an artist that I was incredibly interested in working with. The first time that I was hooked on her music was when I heard her cover of Kid Cudi’s “The Pursuit of Happiness” and to this day it is still one of my favorite covers. I recently had a chance to ask Lissie some questions to preview her big show in the city this coming weekend. We are thrilled to have her on Yow Yow! and are excited to see what’s in store for her.

Q: Why do some artists go by a stage name?
Lissie: I can’t speak for anyone else but growing up being called lissie I never knew anyone else with that name so I thought it was unique and simple

Q: What kinds of rituals or routines do you go through before the night of a show?
Lissie: Steam my vocal chords, warm up voice and drink tequila

Q: For a new artist, what is the best way to go about promoting your music and expanding your audience?
Lissie: Well I think it’s good to have a solid team around you,, like a publicist to get you interviews and opportunities to get in front of people and a booking agent to get you on the road. Of course you can DIY but personally my mind is not organized in that way.

Q: What is it like be a speaker at a TED Conference and speaking on the music industry?
Lissie: It was amazing! The whole conference was so varied, inspiring and interesting! I didn’t speak on the music industry. I played a couple of songs and spoke about music being a way to process emotions and provide hope.

Q: What is the timeline for promoting a new album and what aspects are required in order for it to be successful?
Lissie: I’d imagine its different for different people but for me we started about 5 months before the release, hitting the road again, doing promo and festivals. The weeks before and of release lots of interviews and TV. And social media during the whole process,, the making and completing and then building excitement leading up to it! I’m not sure there is a sure fire way to insure success though. You could spend tons of money on ads & shove yourself down everyone’s throats and still not be successful. At the end of the day you gotta have a great “product” to promote.

Recent College Grads Equipped With Advice

tumblr_l2lx84w9k81qai1rho1_500

I noticed a slight trend today of articles posted on LinkedIn and all of them had to do with advice recent grads should take. Now in my last post, I discussed that advice should not always be taken in at once. For one, it’s too much information. Two, it’s not always applicable, but it will be when the “timing is right.” I can’t even begin to tell you how much I hate saying that last part and how much it has been said to me in the last few months, but in this moment right now, nothing seemed more fitting.

Whether it was a trend on LinkedIn or the fact that my talk is coming up and I am trying to solidify my material, every article I read today on this subject was beneficial. I wish that I had this advice when I came out of college. Would I have taken it as seriously? Probably not. That’s the problem that my professor  who’s class I am speaking to posed to me as a problem. Even though I would have this advice to give to these students, they may not see the value because they haven’t had the year of working experience that I have just had. Regardless, I do hope that my advice will spark something – a change, an opinion, or inspiration.

Here are the articles and posts that I read today:

THIS Movie Trailer

Has some strong language. And when I say that, I mean, don’t watch it in the office or the classroom, k?

On another note, Ted stars Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis, and one cuddly teddy bear with a sailor’s mouth!
