Finding Beyoncé

It’s 2017 and by now, the children that are growing up probably have no idea what “Where’s Waldo” is. The people behind Sugoi Books are bringing this little part of our childhood book back and this time with “Finding Beyoncé” In a new 40-page illustrated book, children must pick out their Beyoncé in chaotic events that typically might surround the R&B singer.

“We’ve put together a glorious illustrated tribute to Queen B where you get to swim through the pages and find out where’s she’s hidden on the page,” the publisher wrote on the product page. “Think Where’s Waldo but with way more sass.”

Barry Jenkins’ Intended Oscar Speech

I might have expressed too much anger on Twitter Sunday night after the wrong film was called for “Best Picture” and the reason why is because this flub did not give “Moonlight” the attention it deserved. There have been many articles and critiques written about this already so I don’t want to echo anything you’ve already heard, but the cast of “Moonlight” didn’t have their opportunity to truly shine. Instead, the whole event was directed at Warren Beatty, Steve Harvey, “La La Land,” and now there is even a cover in which “La La Land” and “Moonlight” have to share the spotlight together. That was really unnecessary.

Since Sunday night was such a fiasco, Barry didn’t get to deliver the speech that he intended. That has been released today though and I thought I would include that for all of you to read:

“Given what happened in those last 10 minutes of the ceremony, I don’t know how I managed any words at all,” Jenkins concluded. “It is what it is.”

Khalid – Saved Documentary

I spent 90 minutes straight listening to Khalid’s latest single “Shot Down” last night. I was getting ready for bed and since I couldn’t figure out the repeat/loop on my Spotify app from my phone, I would restart the song every time I got down to the last 5 seconds. This isn’t out of character for me. When I get wrapped up in a song, it becomes obsessive. Each time it is played it sounds a little bit different to me. Each time it is played, it seems like the track keeps getting shorter and shorter and I have to restart more often. I’ve been like this since I was a kid. No one in my immediate family has ever been like this towards music the way I have been and sometimes it’s scary, but I actually think it’s kind of funny and interesting. I felt like I was examining every part of this song – every rift and verse and every beat that would make it into a choreography piece that I was dreaming up. I had a busy Monday ahead of me and instead of going to bed early, we listened to this track until 1:30 AM. I woke up this morning feeling more tired than I should be, but we’re still listening to Khalid.

I was first introduced to Khalid this past summer with “Location.” I had watched someone’s video of a piece they choreographed to the song and I couldn’t get it out of my head. Who was this guy? I needed to know more about this voice – and it’s funny for me to write this line because I used to feel this way about artists all the time when I was working more closely with music. I would ramble on and on about an artist or a band that those around me did not care about. Bless those that had the patience to listen. As time went on, more and more of his tracks were released and I loved each one a little bit more than the last. Then The Fader released this documentary on him and about how March 3rd was going to change this 18 year old kid’s life. I believe it. I haven’t been this excited about a debut album in a long time and 2017 has brought us some good albums already with Syd and Sampha in the last week.

Performance of the Day

My followers on Spotify may have seen me listening to this song over and over (and over and over and over) again up to 26 times on a weekday last week after 10:30 PM. We’re not really sure what happened, but at the end of the track, we never could find ourselves moving on from it. And yes – I did ugly cry to it. You would too!

Sampha just released his album on Spotify tonight! And we’re actually about to listen to it the whole way through. I’ve been anticipating it ever since my ears first heard this track and we have high hopes that it will an album that we’ll be repeating all weekend long.

Remix of the Day

So here’s the thing, when I first heard Selena Gomez’s single “Kill Em With Kindness,” I was pretty much over it. I couldn’t get into it, I didn’t want to listen to it on the radio, I never wanted to hear the song if it were up to me. But when I heard that River Tiber decided to remix it and slow it down a bit, I thought – maybeeeeee I can give this a try. Sure enough, it felt like a completely different song – one that I would actually like to listen to on the reg. I can’t embed it here, but you can listen to it over at The Fader.

Vince Staples x The Fader

I discovered today that I actually haven’t listened to any music by Vince Staples, which is surprising to me because you would think that we would have crossed paths already. I’ve always loved The Fader though and actually most music publications for that matter because there are so many places that do artist profiles really well and they are definitely one of them. I was completely into this profile of Vince Staples and found myself enjoying it a lot – so much that I had to excessively tweet about it twice. Maybe a little overkill, but just trying to get a serious point across y’all! In addition to the content of this profile, the editorial spread is pretty good also so we’re going to include that for you today too.
