The Flavr Blue in the Bay

It just so happened that my day off landed on the day of The Flavr Blue concert in San Francisco. I’ve missed countless shows from not being in Seattle for the last year and every time I did come back to Seattle, I would always miss their shows by a couple of days. It was the worst luck. I’m so glad I got to see them this week because they are even more wonderful than before and it’s nice to have a slice of home in your new home.

Hollis and I also finally got the chance to meet each other for the first time! “Of course I know who you are, you’re Katie Yow Yow!”

We’ve always liked working with her and can’t wait to see what amazing things she’s going to do next with The Flavr Blue and on her own.

Out on the Town: 11/19

I know we’re a little bit early on letting you know that The Flavr Blue is going to be in the Bay, but that’s just how excited I am about this! I love when pieces of home find me in the Bay and I’ve been waiting for The Flavr Blue to return back to the Bay Area so there’s no way that I’m missing this show at DNA Lounge. A concert on a Wednesday evening? Looks like we’ll have to find a way to make this work. Also, while we’re thrilled about the San Francisco date, we figured that the group might have fans all over the West Coast so these dates are for you too!

Music Video of the Day

When this song was first released, I was so excited about it. I probably listened to it every day last summer. This weekend I’m flying back to my hometown, but completely blowing it and missing them at Sasquatch. I can’t win. All I got was this music video and that no where near compares to a live performance from them. For everyone seeing them at the Gorge – have so much fun!

The Flavr Blue – Ghost

This song wasn’t featured on either of their albums, but it’s one of my favorites to see them perform live.

SXSW Seattle Send-Off!

Similar to CMJ, I always get a little excited when I hear that some of my favorite local Seattle bands are headed off to SXSW.

Congrats to:

  • The Flavr Blue
  • Hey Marseilles
  • Allen Stone
  • Barcelona
  • Cardiknox – okay so they’re in NY, but Thomas Dutton was from Seattle
  • Grieves
  • Kris Orlowski
  • La Luz
  • Mary Lambert
  • Sol
  • Tacocat
  • THEESatisfaction

Also – shameless plug, one of my favorite Seattle bands, The Flavr Blue is performing at Neumos for their SXSW send-off and if you’re not doing anything tomorrow night, then you should definitely be there. It’s only $5 and it will pretty much be the best time of your life. It’s not sold out yet. I wish I were home.

Hollis Wong-Wear in Mass Appeal

We have a little bit of something called a “soft spot” when it comes to former Yow Yow! guests getting media attention. Our girl, Hollis Wong-Wear walked the red carpet at the Grammys Sunday evening because if Macklemore and Ryan Lewis had won for Album of the Year she would have gotten to walk up on stage with the group to accept that award. Sadly, the win wasn’t in their favor, but that didn’t mean that the duo didn’t take home plenty of awards including “Best Rap Album.” Though we know her for her rift in “White Walls,” Hollis has played a huge role in the music that Macklemore and Ryan Lewis has made and that’s why we are so darn proud of her and can’t wait for what’s to come from not only her side project “The Flavr Blue,” but her solo project that she has slightly teased us with.

Check out her interview with Mass Appeal here and her Billboard interview on the red carpet here.

Favorites of 2013

Favorite Style Icon: Alexa Chung

This should really come as no surprise. Since Alexa Chung came into my life, I have always been a fan of her outfit choices. I noticed last year, I selected Taylor Swift, but really – Alexa blew her and everyone else out of the water in 2013. With her new book that we are dying to read and collections of hers popping up all over the place, we are looking forward to what she’ll be bringing to the table in 2014.

Runner up: Kiernan Shipka

Top 25 Seattle Albums of 2013

DJ Marc Collins recently revealed his top 25 Seattle albums for the year and I couldn’t agree more with it. It’s a fantastic list, but more importantly he has listed out albums from bands and artists that I respect, admire, and feel so lucky to have worked with in my time with music back in Seattle. Congratulations to Campfire OK, Pickwick, Macklemore, and The Flavr Blue. And though I haven’t worked with them personally – huge shout out to my former boss in Hey Marseilles! I remember a time when I was 16 and attending shows every weekend. The music I liked back then was poppy and it seemed like everyone was in a band. Then without any warning, something happened and the Seattle music scene kind of shut down. It returned when I was in college with a completely new sound and a more exciting genre. Right now, the music scene in Seattle is on fire and I couldn’t be happier. I think about it every single day and while there is no interesting music scene here in Silicon Valley, I’m okay with being loyal to just one area. Below is Marc’s full list. Congrats everyone!

1. Timothy Robert Graham – The Hidden Rose
2. Pickwick – Can’t Talk Medicine
3. Rose Windows – The Sun Dogs
4. Mary Lambert – Welcome to the Age of My Body
5. Glitterbang – Occasionally, Love Is War
6. Hobosexual – Hobosexual II
7. La Luz – It’s Alive
8. Nissim – Nissim
9. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis – The Heist
10. The Flavr Blue – Brite Vices
11. Hey Marseilles – Lines We Trace
12. Jaymes Young – Dark Star
13. Nacho Picasso – High & Mighty
14. Campfire Ok – When You Have Arrived
15. Ra Scion – The Sickle & The Sword
16. Walking Papers – Walking Papers
17. Monogamy Party – False Dancers
18. Moondoggies – Adios I’m a Ghost
19. Cock & Swan – Secret Angles
20. Grave Babies – Crusher
21. Cumulus – I Never Meant It To Be Like This
22. Ravenna Woods – The Jackals
23. Mudhoney – Vanishing Point
24. Aaron Sprinkle – Water & Guns
25. Pearl Jam – Lightening Bolt

And here are my most anticipated Seattle Records of 2014:

Katie Kate – LP 2
Cataldo – Gilded Oldies
Motopony – New!

Hollis Wong-Wear for Billboard Magazine

photo cred | Behzod Sirjani

One of the best parts about writing for Yow Yow! is having the opportunity to interview individuals that I admire and individuals that do something completely different with their craft than I do. We were thrilled to have Hollis on the blog earlier this year as part of our “Women Who Are Making It” series. We always knew that she was going to be a big deal someday and she’s well on her way to getting there. Recognized for her chorus in Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ “White Walls” along with being an all-around icon in the Seattle music scene for her work behind the scenes on their music videos and working with Blue Scholars, Hollis is a woman of many talents. She has her own band, The Flavr Blue, which I listen to daily and now she’s got an article by Billboard Magazine. You can read it here.

Congrats Hollis! No one is more deserving than you and we’ll be rooting for you every day.

The Flavr Blue – Bright Vices EP

I know we already posted a Song of the Day for you, but we’ve got a special treat up our sleeve. Today is a HUGE day for Seattle music as The Head and the Heart released their new album and The Flavr Blue released their new EP. I’ve been listening to The Flavr Blue for most of the year and have heard almost all of these tracks performed live this summer, but hearing it off of the EP sounds incredible.

Though we’re located in the Bay, one thing still hasn’t changed. Yow Yow! is still a huge supporter for local Seattle music and we don’t think that’s going to change any time soon. I wanted to make sure that you all had something to listen tomorrow for your Tuesday so here is there entire EP streaming on SoundCloud on Yow Yow!

Music Video of the Day

Readers, it has been the summer of “The Flavr Blue.” Yesterday, the Seattle group released their latest music video for one of my favorite jamz “In My Dream” and I couldn’t wait for it to show up on YouTube so I could share it with all of you.

Seattle, I will always rep you hard even while living in the Bay.

Seattle music, I wouldn’t be who I am today if you hadn’t been my outlet.

Hollis Wong-Wear, Yow Yow! will always be your biggest fan!
