This or That

sam_avatar

This year, I recently stopped watching Glee – because let’s just be honest with ourselves here,  we have no idea what is going on with the show. If Lea Michele is not a full-time character and stuck in high school, then what are we watching the show for?  I’m not sure if the series is trying to mold itself like Degrassi right now by looping in new characters that are younger and transitioning them through high school, but it isn’t working. At least – it’s not working smoothly. I will, however, write this one last post about Glee. A couple summers ago, there was a show called “The Glee Project” in which normal kids that could sing and act, but mostly sing would compete for a chance on the show. One winner looked exactly like an Avatar character and therefore inspired one of my favorite Yow Yow! posts.

Sam – the Avatar look-a-like recently cut off his dreads and no longer looks like this. Now he looks like someone completely different, but someone told me that aliens could transform themselves…

A Collection Part 28

The current season plays a huge role in these selection of photos this time around. It wasn’t until I finished that I noticed that there was a tinge of earthy colors transitioning from fall into winter. I hope you guys enjoy all of the photos! I also hope that you’ve all had a wonderfully relaxing Thanksgiving holiday.

Has Foster the People Taken Over the World Yet?

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNlFVysGj2Y]

I need to be very careful with my wording because the last time I wrote about this band, I got made fun of by a friend of mine who called me out on sounding too much like a pretentious hipster.

Anyways, I caught their performance on SNL last night and found it to be kind of amusing. If you’ve ever seen them perform (which I’ve only seen on TV and stream) then you’ll notice just how goofy these guys really look when they are performing. Lead singer Mark Foster is just a gangly little thing, but at the same time I feel like I have to give this band some praise because they are quite possibly the most hipster band out right now and have managed to make even the non-hipsters fall in love with them. I think many of their fans just don’t realize it though.

Found this cover video today of Pumped Up Kicks (WHOA big surprise!)  made by three contestants of the Glee Project and AJ Rafael and loved it. I think this friendship is fairly recent, but I find it to be kind of awesome because… it’s the Glee Project kids and also…Cameron Mitchell swoon swoooooon.

A Collection Part 26

As I was laying in my deathbed the other day recovering from Bumbershoot, five feet away from me Veronica shouted “KATIE! COLLECTION POST! When are you going to change your header?” I’m not sure if many of you realized this by now, but Veronica is one of the few people I listen to when it comes to Yow Yow. Oh and I also listened to Evan when he told me the other day that my Foster the People rant was “SO HIPSTER,” which made me so self-conscious that I decided to delete it altogether.

The road to recovering from Bumbershoot has been steady, but has obviously set me back a little bit. On top of that, I’ve also gotten some new hardware! YEAH! So I’m busy making transfers and starting fresh all over again. It’s safe to say that at this point, Yow Yow! will no longer be doing 17 posts a day as summer comes to an end. That’s right – it’s finally hitting me, but what an incredible last summer this has been for me. I am grateful to have had this opportunity to spend time with my family and friends and to actually have time to focus on myself more than ever. That’s not meant to sound selfish at all. Anyone that knows me will tell you that I am usually MIA throughout the school year (unless they work with me/have classes w/ me) because I am constantly on the go. For once, I got to experience what it was like to have absolutely nothing on my plate. I even got bored a few times – most likely during the time I spent writing those 17 posts.

Anyways, since I won’t be doing much posting over the next couple of days, I thought I would do a Collection post for all of you to enjoy!

Song of the Day

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0mFxPa2gV4]

Macy Maloy – Lose It All For You

Generally the songs I choose for “Song of the Day” are songs that I’ve been listening to recently. They normally have music videos associated with them and/or most of the artists are signed. So I did a little creeping after The Glee Project ended and discovered the YouTube page of Cameron Mitchell’s girlfriend, Miss Macy Maloy. On her YouTube page, you’ll find a combination of covers and original songs, but the one I’m featuring above is an original.

As much as I love discovering new artists and bands, I know that searching for them through YouTube can sometimes be exhausting. It’s worked for many artists today and I can see why agents do it, but do you know how many music accounts there are? Every now and then I’ll come across someone I really like though and Macy is one of them. I’ve also been doing a lot of research on YouTube artists because of a new project I’ve been working on. Hopefully I can let you in on that soon too!

*Also this is my 365th SONG OF THE DAY POST! Whoo! You can now listen to a new song everyday for an entire year.

Nerd Herd

On the season finale of The Glee Project, my favorite contestant Cameron returned for the final episode. While I was extremely happy that Damien took home the win, I don’t think I paid that much attention to him as much as I focused on the scenes Cameron was actually in. Bree and I agreed last night that while it is obvious that he is talented, there is definitely something that draws our eye towards him throughout the entire episode. Sure, it’s his voice and the hipster attire, but another part of me thinks that it is because he represents a group of people  that has never been a part of the in crowd: the nerds. There’s no one like him on Glee or even on television right now.

As we all know, I’ve got a pretty sweet spot for the nerds – as do many girls. Can you really find a reason to not like one? I mean, have you ever seen a douchey nerd? And I’m not talking about those pretentious characters in television shows, I mean in real life. They don’t exist! They never cheat, except for that one episode of Saved By the Bell. They are known for being the shy smart types. They’ve got a type of style that isn’t mainstream and they always seem to know what’s going on before everyone else. A blogger’s dream right? Today, I learned from HelloGiggles that there’s actually a distinction between geek, nerd and dork. Who knew, right?

In short:

“Geek- Smart but not awkward
Nerd- Smart and awkward
Dork- Smart in less useful areas, awkward but proud regardless”

Feel free to read the rest of the article here:

What I also recognized today was the similarities between a nerd and a hipster. The same transition process occurs when scenesters become hipster. In this case, you start out being a nerd and develop into a full-grown adult-sized hipster. I’ve decided to highlight some of my favorite nerds in this post, but I’ll let you be the judge as to whether or not they are really as hip as they appear to be.

I think I’ve talked enough about Cameron in the text above so I won’t exhaust you anymore. He is basically the proudest nerd I have ever seen promoting the “Nerd Herd” in his YouTube videos, on the television series, and even in his music.

[Michael Cera]

Self-explanatory.

Song of the Day // Music Spotlight: Cameron Mitchell

Today while I was at work, I decided to calculate/estimate how much time I spend a day listening to music. Lately, it’s all been new music though. I’m currently embarking on a little research project, for which I”m sure some of you may know of, and realized that I am listening to music…constantly. I wish I could give you a time amount, but it’s literally when I’m working and when I’m not working. The only time I’m not listening to music is when I’m out or sleeping. I think I would be perfectly content with my life if I could keep doing what I”m doing for the rest of my life. I get to actively seek out random artists from all over and get to learn about three new bands/artists a day. I wish all of you could witness my excitement over this because it’s a sight to see.

So obviously, it’s no secret that I am a huge fan of Oxygen’s newest reality competition series The Glee Project. C’mon, I know I’m not alone here. I’ve been rooting for my favorites all along and so far they keep advancing! Last night, I decided to do a little digging on my favorite contenders to see if they had any side projects before the show. I didn’t want to pull the same situation with “The Voice” when I discovered one of my favorite singers was a finalist on the very last episode.

Cameron Mitchell is my age and from the city of Ft. Worth, Texas and while I’m a huge fan of his voice, I guess I can admit that I’m a little smitten with his hipster charm. (Didn’t think those existed did you?) So I checked out his stuff and made sure to download his original songs so that I could listen to them on repeat throughout my day. I don’t want to be cliche by saying that it’s nothing like the stuff that I’m listening to today, but it really isn’t. It is not in the same category as Fitz and the Tantrums, Givers, Oh Land, or Tune-yards. Even though they aren’t in the same family, it still doesn’t fail to impress me. It incorporates all of the things I love in a song – dance-ability, catchy lyrics, pop-beat, decent vocals…it’s all here!  So with that said, your Song of the Day is Cameron Mitchell’s Sounds of Letting Go. If you’re interested in hearing more of his music, check out his YouTube, MySpace, or Facebook. You should also try and look for his covers. His “Use Somebody” is phenomenal.
