Time Person of the Year 2012

President Obama y’all!

This is the second time that President Barack Obama has been named Time’s Person of the year.

In a blog post, Time managing editor Richard Stengel explains that Obama was chosen because he is a cultural figure as well as a political one: “There has been much talk of the coalition of the ascendant — young people, minorities, Hispanics, college-educated women — and in winning re-election, Obama showed that these fast-growing groups are not only the future but also the present,” he writes. “If his win in 2008 was extraordinary, then 2012 is confirmation that demographic change is here to stay.”

Top 10 Everything

And so it begins…

Readers, it is time to start counting down to the end of 2012 and the start of 2013. The only way to do that though is to recap the whole year with the best of everything that has happened. Over here at Yow Yow, we do the same thing, but Yow Yow! is a one-woman-show and therefore I am unable to spend a lot of time on these lists. Lucky for me, there’s other people that have the time. So I’d like to introduce the Top 10 of Everything 2012 list by TIME.

TIME’s Person of the Year 2012

It’s a big deal. Every year it always is and to be honest, I’ve never really disagreed with the selection chosen by TIME. They certainly know what they’re doing over there. However, this year it is awfully considerate of them to let us all have a say. This year, TIME will let us have a “People’s Choice” winner and the candidates range from pop culture icons in 2012 to artists to newsmakers and many others. So get voting! You have until Dec. 14 to voice your opinion and students – I know you’ve got those finals coming up so how is this for the perfect time waster?

Don’t Sleep Tonight

When I was in junior high, I told my best friend that the average person eats seven spiders a year while they are sleeping. I mean I can’t fully confirm on that, but it’s what I’ve heard. That night, my friend decided to tape her mouth shut for fear of swallowing a spider…She said she was going to get online and look up a pest control similar to Adam’s Pest Control Residential Pest Services in MN and Wi so she can get rid of any spiders or other pests in her home.

Today, Time published a photo series of what bed bugs look like up close. Bed bugs are such nasty pests and I would HATE to have bed bugs in my mattress, or any pest for that matter!! My friend told me about a time when she had an issue with rats in her house and she had to call pest control out to come and get rid of them for her. She told me about pest control for your home and what to do if you do get pests. This picture is interesting though! Obviously this isn’t to scale, but it’s a little terrifying isn’t it? Somehow, I still see the beauty in these shots.

Time Magazine’s Controversial Cover

The release of Time Magazine’s new cover has left an unsettling feeling in just about everyone. After getting just one glimpse of it, I couldn’t get away. It was discussed on every news blog and website. It is an image that is kept in the back of your head. Many have shared their opinions about the cover claiming that it is inappropriate. Some say it is beautiful. It is an accurate representation of 18-year old Aisha’s traumatizing ordeal.

I believe that the cover of this issue is honest. There’s no photo shop involved or airbrushing. It is visual proof and when something is as true as this, how can you deny it?

Time is typically not known for controversial articles ever, but they certainly made a statement with this one.

The Taliban pounded on the door just before midnight, demanding that Aisha, 18, be punished for running away from her husband’s house. Her in-laws treated her like a slave, Aisha pleaded. They beat her. If she hadn’t run away, she would have died. Her judge, a local Taliban commander, was unmoved. Aisha’s brother-in-law held her down while her husband pulled out a knife. First he sliced off her ears. Then he started on her nose.

This didn’t happen 10 years ago, when the Taliban ruled Afghanistan. It happened last year. Now hidden in a secret women’s shelter in Kabul, Aisha listens obsessively to the news. Talk that the Afghan government is considering some kind of political accommodation with the Taliban frightens her. “They are the people that did this to me,” she says, touching her damaged face…
