Wild Orchid Children Signs to Equal Vision Records

It is no secret that I am a huge fan of Seattle band, Kay Kay and His Weathered Underground. I have been watching this band perform for years and I absolutely adore their music. However, I have forgotten to mention that the guys of Kay Kay formed a second band long ago called Wild Orchid Children. The genre of music varies within the two bands, but they are talented nonetheless. Maybe you’ll like one or the other or maybe you’ll love both!

I’d like to send a huge congratulations to Wild Orchid Children today because they just signed with New York based Equal Vision Records! Former bands on the roster include: Alive in Wild Paint, Portugal. The Man, and Circa Survive. Wild Orchid Children performed at Bumbershoot this past weekend before dropping the big news this morning. They will also be releasing their first full-length album Wild Orchid Children Are Alexander Supertramp on November 9th.

The band began working on this album in spring of 2009 with Tom Pfaeffle at The Tank Studio, but went on hiatus when they learned that Tom Pfaeffle had been fatally wounded that following summer.

Kay Kay and His Weathered Underground Become Sophomores

The Seattle band has just wrapped up their second album in which they worked with the late and great Tom Pfaeffle. The entire CD is up for streaming on their Myspace page. These guys are really great. They were super nice when I had worked with them on a show last year and very laid back. I always get a little excited when I can spot some of their members out and about on the streets of Capitol Hill. Can’t wait to see them live again.

The band also performed last night at Tom Pfaeffle’s memorial show at the Moore Theater in Seattle.

Seattle Music Update

Seeing Lizzie perform last night was amazing. She has such an incredible voice, it’s just always nice to hear and see her as well! It had been what feels like almost a year since I last saw her. We actually left the venue and took the show outside to the park for a more intimately summer setting.

Her show was at the Ground Zero Teen Center, the same place I attended my very first show when I was fifteen. The place has changed SO much. It just looked like a great place with all the young teenagers running around there. It brought back some great memories especially seeing the framed pictures on the wall of  fliers of sold out shows back in the day.

For some reason, being at a show, seeing old friends… it always feels the most comfortable, like my home away from home.

So! I’m going to get to news.

Lizzie will be releasing her album soon. More details will be released later on when I find out.

Tom Pfaeffle’s memorial concert will be on August 13th at the Moore Theater. The time and performances have not been released, but I do know that Kay Kay and His Weathered Underground will be performing I believe.

– My dear friend Matt Bekker will be performing tomorrow at the Edgewater Hotel. I went to see him last week and posted, so if you are interested in what you have seen go check him out.

Check out the event here

Andrew and Eric from the band The Scene Aesthetic are recording in California right now and every so often they will have uStream shows, in which they answer questions from fans or give you a glimpse of their recording sessions. You can find more information about those from their Twitter so become a follower!

Tom Pfaeffle Case

I was shocked to hear about Tom Pfaeffle’s tragic death when I arrived home just after midnight on the night of the shooting.

I never knew Tom, I had just known that my friends had the opportunity to work with him and as I listen to their CD’s now, I know Tom had been partly responsible for them.

Ever since I heard word, I have been reading many articles and have tried to stay updated in the whole situation. New details have emerged from an article I just read which was a follow up from the initial story written on Saturday night after the incident.

Of the suspect:

“The man is to be arraigned today on charges of second-degree murder and assault.

[Twisp Police Chief Rick] Balam said the man could not reasonably argue he was defending himself against potential intruders: “He had a total disregard for human safety,” Balam said. “It’s just crazy.”

Sorry, I didn’t recap the whole story since I explained it in a previous post. For the full updated article click here

So, I have a question to ask for any of my readers who will answer.

Does this suspect have a valid point? In no way am I taking his side at all, of course I believe he was in the wrong. If this man had not jumped to conclusions Tom Pfaeffle would still be alive and with his wife and four kids. If this man had waited a minute or two longer when Tom had realized the key did not fit and that he was at the wrong room he would still be alive. The sad truth is, I know people who are like this man. People who live their lives in fear believing the worst in people to the point that they no longer answer their door, do not answer calls from numbers that are not saved in their phone (even if it might be someone they know.)

How did we get to this point? One contributing factor is the news. What we see and read affects the way we live our lives and no doubt causes us to not be as trusting towards others. Who’s to say this won’t happen again? Is another person going to lose their life because someone is living in a state of paranoia?

I’ve been hearing a rumor about a memorial show, but I’m not sure of the details just yet. I’ll post them when they become final.

Tom Pfaeffle killed last night in motel shooting

Tom Pfaeffle was a great sound engineer who had his very own recording studio out in Black Diamond, WA called The Tank. I never knew him personally or met him, but I do know that he played a large role in helping my friends Eric and Andrew from The Scene Aesthetic in releasing their first EP’s as well as helping many other Seattle bands I listen to. He is also known for working with Nirvana, The Black Crowes and Heart.

On Friday the 17th, around 10:42, Tom Pfaeffle, was shot at a hotel in the city of Twisp. Tom passed away from his wounds two hours later at Mid-Valley Hospital in Omak. The suspect was then booked for second degree murder and reckless endangerment.

The reason for this shooting taking place is still unknown but police believe that Tom may have tried to enter the wrong room at the motel.

Rest in peace Tom. My prayers go out to your family. You contribution is greatly appreciated within the Seattle music scene.

EDIT

Kay Kay and His Weathered Underground, a band that I admire and listen to regularly had been working very closely with Tom for the past couple of years and released their statement about Tom’s death this morning. It’s actually an incredible read that I find very honest and it has reiterated that Tom will never truly be forgotten.
