The Closet: January 2019

Free People Esmeralda Printed Skirt – $98

2019 is off to a strong start! I used to always view the New Year as the start of the school year ie) the time for a new wardrobe. Becoming a little bit more aware of myself and my spending habits though, I decided to start off the new year by curbing my shopping addiction. It helped that going home for the holidays, I was able to inherit some clothes from my mom’s closet. They were the classic staples that I would’ve bought for myself like cozy sweaters, sweater dresses, and turtlenecks, but this time I didn’t have to spend a ton of money for it. They are fitting into my wardrobe with pieces I already own quite nicely. That being said, it’s still fun to have a wish list so these posts will never go away! Here are just a few favorites that I’ve been eyeing from afar.

Holiday Party Wear 2018

For Love and Lemons Marquee Maxi Dress – $270

Every year, holiday party season always comes up so fast! I’m excited this year to have a true holiday party with my current company and the opportunity to dress up. As soon as I discovered the date, I was off to the races. There are actually so many options this holiday season that I’m swooning over, but the trouble with every year is that I have in my mind what I already want. The hard part of that is that it often times is hard to find where that exists. Since I hold onto that dream of a dress for so long, I often don’t find it and find myself stressing last minute.

This year’s party will be on a Friday – a first for me! It’s also unfortunately the first year where Mandi and I won’t be getting ready together. I’ll be using my new favorite startup Glamsquad for hair and makeup though which I can’t say enough good things about. Lastly, I’ve got a couple of ideas in mind for what I want to wear, but I’m not quite ready to share that yet. What I do know is that I want to stay away from lace if I can and sleeves because we did that last year. If things don’t work out for me, at least I’ve got a post to fall back on.

To get into the spirit of creating this post, I just looked at last years post and am surprised at how much my tastes have changed in the last year. Since my party is earlier, I wanted to start this post early. We’re also going to release it earlier than any other year prior. Enjoy!

The Closet: August 2018

Peixoto Nissi Pom Pom Dress – $102

This is an eclectic mix of items! If I’m being honest, I’ve been curating this list since August and every time I missed the time in which I could post it, I decided to just hold onto it until the next month. Since starting my new job, I indulged in my version of “self care” a little bit harder than the norm. I was convinced that fall was coming (not false) and that I needed a new sweater every week. As much as I love shopping, it isn’t sustainable to make a new purchase weekly so as of very recently I’m cutting myself off. Tommy tried to solicit me to go to Nordstrom Rack tomorrow for a big sale and I even said no to that.

The Closet: July 2018

Lara Swimsuit Pale Blue – $165.94

I am headed out for my getaway later on this week so it’s no surprise that we’ve got vacation items on the brain! It’s been feeling quite chilly in the Bay so a trip to warmer temperatures is everything we need. For the first time in years, I’ve acquired three new swimsuits in one year and I do’t even want to quit! How delicious are some of these ones that I’m sharing with you below? And of course, for warmer evenings, there’s nothing more that you could want than easier slip dresses to toss on over your head. Raise your hand if you could live in summer mode forever. That’s us!

Beanie Transformation

Cardigan + Shoes – Mom’s / Jacket – Topshop / Pants + Beanie – Aritzia

Growing up, I knew a lot of girls in my circle who were proud to be tomboys. I don’t feel like there was ever a point in time in my life where it wasn’t cool to be a tomboy except maybe watching the girls that were on MTV’s “Made.” However, that was never me. For as long as I’ve known, I have loved being a girly girl, but then I think having an older brother helped me to explore other avenues. After all, I did get his hand-me-downs! He helped pick out my first pair of fashionable sneakers – a pair of brown and pink corduroy Puma’s and influenced my style through the teenage and college years.

What I find interesting about fashion is just because it is an industry that is heavily dominated by females, it does not mean that there isn’t a place for men in this space. I know I’m not telling you anything new here. To this day, I love going into boutiques just for men and there are plenty of pieces in my closet that are more masculine that I pair with feminine. This look is the perfect example of that and it’s probably why I love it so much.

Another reason why I love this look is because it’s sort of paying homage to my own mother! This cardigan and these shoes (completely worn out by the way) are both hers. The cardigan is so feminine, but it becomes a little bit tougher when you pair it with structured black trousers and an oversized coat. I remember when I bought this coat a couple of years ago that I was quite self conscious about it being a little too big or roomier in the shoulders. I’m happy to share that I’ve since grown into it or haven’t even noticed that it was an issue! The beanie is a small piece of this outfit, but one that makes a statement. It makes this formal look more casual and it adds a bit of warmth to the top of my head. I am forever loving this outfit and can’t believe it even took me this long to put it together!

Our Favorite Looks of 2017

Duster – Azalea / Tee – Abercrombie & Fitch / Pants – Uniqlo / Boots – J. Crew

Sure, these are my 12 favorites look of the year, but they also overlap with 12 of my favorite backdrops from the year! If you’re someone who documents your OOTD’s, then you know that these two things kind of go hand in hand. This year, I experienced a major shift in my outfits and that is mostly due to a location change. Living in South Bay was a dream, but it meant that I was living in this sort of alternate reality where it was summertime every single day. The last four years of that are something that I would never give back, but now that I’m living in San Francisco, I’m glad that I get to dress for true weather. It reminds me of my days in Seattle.

In 2017, I embraced a very casual look and I pushed the boundaries of day to night wear. I showed love to some of my favorite accessories (bandana, baseball cap, choker) and revived some old favorites (Keds!) We didn’t find ourselves immersed in any crazy trends… but I did find some pieces worn by other people on Instagram that I went out and bought myself! It’s not really the same thing, you guys. It’s almost… worse.

Holiday Party Wear 2017

Free People Cabbage Rose Velvet Jumpsuit – $98

It’s so hard to know when exactly to start writing this post to give everyone ample time to start their holiday party shopping. I’m also not the best example of this because I have purchased my dress just one week before and then also five months before the party – as in I didn’t even know the date yet, but I knew I wanted that dress! This year, for the first time ever – I have two holiday parties, but both being very different. My own company’s holiday party will actually be in January and will be somewhat non-traditional in that it’s not how most tech companies celebrate the holidays and I won’t be dressing up, but it will still be very special in its own way. The second holiday party will be with Google at the MOMA this coming Saturday! It’s the first time I’ve also gone to one this early, but I’m very excited to accompany one of my favorite couples – Mandi and Eric for what is considered more traditional – an evening of eating, drinking, museum-ing, and dancing!

It’s funny how every year I go into holiday party mode thinking that I want one kind of dress and actually end up purchasing one completely different. This year, I wanted to throw in a not so holiday party dress color – millennial pink! I know it would’ve been a challenge trying to find the perfect one (likely Topshop) but before I even got to searching, I ended up finding a long-sleeved, mock-neck, lace mini from Aritzia. Stick with what you know, right?

Well, in the brief shopping moments that I’ve had, I’ve been noticing a lot of beautiful pieces for this holiday season. I’m taking a break from work this evening to share with you some of my favorite looks!

2017 Met Gala Red Carpet

I wanted so badly to get home early Monday evening so that I could have this post ready in time for Tuesday morning as a recap, but of course, we stayed at work a little bit later that night. The good thing about writing this post now though is that I feel like I’m not under a time crunch and I can really take my time with it.

Bee Shaffer is not exactly “in” the fashion world, but her mother is Anna Wintour and every year she continues to stun. This was one of my favorite looks from the evening. Here she is wearing Alexander McQueen with her fiance Francesco Carrozzini. #powercouple

Baby Pink is Back!

I’ve spent the last year consistently adding black and white pieces to my closet. I was convinced that color was dead – at least for me! That is… until this week when I discovered all of my favorite must-have wants are coming in shades of baby pink. And I’m not turning away from them. So I’m declaring it – baby pink is making a comeback this year and we are more than a little excited about it. The best part about this shade of pink is that it’s very subtle and if you want to wear a minimally styled outfit with black or white, a little pop of baby pink will do just the trick. Here are my favorite items from this week for our wishlist:
