Designers Invade Athletics

Karl Lagerfeld just released this new Chanel emblemmed football that will cost you $195. Would you buy it? That’s a ridiculous amount of money to be spending on a football that you could probably buy at a sports store for much less. When I read about this, I started to think about what I could spend with $195… ten items from Urban Outfitters, a little over three weeks on my meal plan at school, or a donation to those affected by the earthquake in Haiti.

I watched an episode of Tough Love a few weeks back where one of the contestants on the show blatantly said something like, “Why would I pay that much for a designer bag for a  name brand stitched into it?” She made a good point.

A friend asked me the other day how much one of my most expensive pieces of clothing cost. I said my Anthropologie cardigan that I spent $100 for, BUT I bought it with my own money and I bought it four years ago and am still wearing it today. I have realized that when I make purchases, most of the time they are necessities, but if it’s going to be a piece of clothing it better be WORTH IT. I don’t buy clothes because of the brands, though I do favor other brands more than others. I analyze prices, the material, how long it might last, it’s versatility w/ my other clothing, etc.

So what’s the most expensive thing that you have ever bought on your own? Was it worth it?

Life Unexpected

Tonight was a television premiere night for three new shows. First on the review board is Life Unexpected. Before I start, I would just like to say that I haven’t watched regular television in quite some time. Every Sunday, I watch Tough Love with my girls and Greek when it is in season. I watched the entire season of Glee when I was at home for break. With my schedule, it’s really hard to make time for television, but somehow tonight I managed to free up two and a half hours for this.

I first heard about Life Unexpected a couple months ago. The previews looked decent. I was mostly drawn to the show for Shiri Appleby because  she used to be in one of my favorite shows, Roswell, (once on the WB) back when I was ten.

Synopsis: Lux is a fifteen year old girl on the verge of her sixteenth birthday. She has been in foster care all her life and is now seeking emancipation, but she can’t do that unless she gets her birth parents to sign the papers. Both parents are shocked that she has come into their lives and are young and frazzled. Surprise! What else is new? The judge doesn’t grant her emancipation in court because the girl has no job and no place to live. Clearly she isn’t fit to live on her own so she grants her birth parents joint custody.

My take on the show: I’m really quite interested in it so far. The advertisements say it’s like a Juno meets Gilmore Girls, but it is not. For some reason, I do feel like I have seen a show like this before. Do I think it will survive? It’s hard to say. I would really like it to, but it had better have a more hard hitting second episode, cause the premiere was just a tad bit predictable.
