School: 10 Favorite Posts

Earlier this afternoon, I received my school’s quarterly magazine and instantly missed everything about being back in school. This past week, I have been feeling all sorts of nostalgia. I wanted to be a freshman again. I wanted to see my friends. This time last year before class started, I was doing happy hours every day (not just for the drinks y’all! Happy hour food is my guilty pleasure.) It also didn’t help that some of my favorite professors that I’ve ever had were featured in this magazine’s issue too. So all of these mixed emotions led me to looking back on my college days and selecting my 10 favorite “school-themed” posts to highlight.

It’s time for a blast from the past! And when I say past, I mean three months ago.

  1. What I’ll Miss About “Greek” (Because I lived vicariously through these characters who had a Greek system)
  2. From One Post Grad to Many Undergrads
  3. Work With Me, Mentee
  4. {Guest Post} By Ashley de Leon
  5. Pickwick Surprises
  6. Prom Season Is Coming Up
  7. Dorm Life
  8. Meet: Brendan Leonard
  9. Smart
  10. Connie is a Graduate [from my idol Connie Wang]

Pickwick Surprises

Local Seattle band, Pickwick, is following in the footsteps of their frands Campfire OK by performing impromptu performances around town. This one was done recently at the University of Washington’s Suzzallo Reading Room. Lucky students!

Maryama: Sk8ter Girl

Two Seattle University students recently filmed a documentary about a young Muslim girl who has found a passion for skateboarding. Maryama is a 20-year old student from the University of Washington and has only been skating for about a year, but constantly finds herself making up excuses to her parents about her favorite hobby. She seems like an amazing young woman. Kudos to her for doing what she loves! Watch this documentary here.

It Gets Better

Seattle columnist Dan Savage recently started the It Gets Better campaign to send a message to those who are LGBQT youth. They are videos that offer support and kindness. They spread the general message that no matter what situation you are in right now, it will get better. Many celebrities have contributed to the campaign as well as non-celebrities – people that just want to let others know that people are there for them.

Here is a very touching message from Tim Gunn and below a message from Dan Savage about how to get involved.

“If you’re gay or lesbian or bi or trans and you’ve ever read about a kid like Billy Lucas and thought, “Fuck, I wish I could’ve told him that it gets better,” this is your chance. We can’t help Billy, but there are lots of other Billys out there—other despairing LGBT kids who are being bullied and harassed, kids who don’t think they have a future—and we can help them.

They need to know that it gets better. Submit a video. Give them hope.”

Today was a very sad day in Seattle as we received news of the deaths of two college students from Western Washington University and the University of Washington. My thoughts and prayers go out to all of your families and friends.

Out on the Town: 9/27

The University of Washington Arts and Entertainment program will be hosting their Fall Fling this year with special guests Reliant K, and Seattle’s own This Providence and The Scene Aesthetic.

I realize that I am letting you guys all know more than a week in advance, but that’s just the planner in me. The concert will be open to the public and FREE. You know how much I love free events… You don’t want to miss this show though because This Providence and The Scene Aesthetic are both incredible performers. I have been listening to these two bands for over five years now and have grown up seeing them perform at local venues all over Seattle. They have both come so far – go and show your support for them and local Seattle music.

Out on the Town: 5/21

Sorry this is so small – you get the jist. Quadstock is over and the University of Washington is the last school to finally host their music festivities. This year, their special guest is Common along with James Pants and Kore lonz. Really though, it’s basically Common. That will probably be an incredible show so mainstreamers of UW celebrate! I’m not exactly sure if non-students can go, but the school is so big they probably won’t even know. Don’t take my word for it though. Last year they brought Built to Spill and Ra Ra Riot. Two years ago, UW featured an all-star lineup of Seattle locals including Blue Scholars, and my favorites Kay Kay and His Weathered Underground and Minus the Bear. It was an amazing show. I’m really glad that I made the trip to go see them because it was totally worth it. The best part? It’s completely free. When I went two years ago, I got in just fine, but I’m not too sure if they are still doing things the same way.

The Original Red Robin to close

The first Red Robin ever near the University of Washington on 3272 Fuhrman Ave. E is set to close at the end of March. Well sort of. March 21st,  happens to be the birthday of my best friend, who happened to work there for almost three years, at least two years. So Red Robin holds a very soft spot in my heart and although I’ve never eaten at this location, it is the first original Red Robin. Ever.

That’s like saying you’re going to close down the first Starbucks at Pike Place Market. That’s just not going to happen. Turns out the reason that the closing is happening at all is because the historical building that it is in is just getting too expensive, therefore, the general manager has decided “not to renew their lease”.

To read more about the article in the Seattle Times click here

Some people are actually so upset w/ the closing that they decided to start a Facebook group about it in hopes to keep the restaurant open. It’s just the thing to do these days… click here to view.

Out on the Town: 11/6

No, he’s not. He’s just coming to the University of Washington’s Kane Hall to speak on November 6th at 6:30 PM. I can’t imagine what his speech will be about, but I would love to be in the same room as him.
