Layered Velvet

Turtleneck + Dress – Aritzia / Choker – Urban Outfitters

I wish I could confidently say that I’ve mastered the art of layering, but I haven’t. Not one bit. I am, however, trying my hardest! As many of you know, summer didn’t technically hit San Francisco until about this weekend, but before that the temperatures have been temperate and layering in the fall is just the same as layering in San Francisco’s “summer.” I decided to pair two of my favorite Aritzia pieces together – the turtleneck that all of you have seen a dozen times and a purple and black velvet babydoll dress. Until this point, I had never tried to layer it over anything. It was a great evening dress to wear out – I remember wearing it on New Year’s Eve once and since then I’ve always worn it with other items like a cardigan over it. In photos, this outfit is a winner. In reality, it’s a little bit tight, y’all! If the dress were just one more size up, we’d probably be in good shape.

Good Good Hair

Top – Brandy Melville / Denim – Urban Outfitters

Social media is a funny thing. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen a piece on a friend in their photos and have messaged them immediately to be like, “What is this? Where did you get it? How much was it?” That’s what this Brandy Melville top was for me and my friend Wanita. And what’s even more funny is the piece that I heard about it from someone else is the piece that people will then in turn ask me about – it all come around full circle. For the last year, bandanas have been my favorite accessory. They’re inexpensive and there are so many ways to wear them as part of your outfit – whether that’s around your neck, in your hair, or even tied to your bag. I can’t live without them.

The five pieces that stole my heart for July and the last five we’ll see before we head into a dreamy fall! For Sub Pop

Top – Sub Pop / Denim + Cap – Urban Outfitters / Sneakers – Converse

Holy smokes! Look how bebe I look in this photo above. I am late 20’s going on 14 here; the funny thing is though is that this is exactly how I dressed when I was 14 so it’s almost a little bit eerie to be looking at this. Is it weird to say that one of my favorite places is the Sea-Tac Airport? Sometimes I ask my parents to drop me off a little bit earlier than I need for my flight so that I can spend my time there shopping and having one last meal before I take off. Sub Pop Records happens to have a merch store there which I highly recommend everyone checking out because you can get – well – records, so many tees, and other fun gifts. I basically make a purchase every time I drop in and have two tees and a sweatshirt from them. I like this tee a lot for its simplicity, but the material fits like a boys’ tee so it might not be the most comfortable tee to wear. I paired this with denim, Converse, and a backwards baseball cap because I wanted to dress not like myself AT ALL THIS DAY.

Cerulean

Turtleneck + Cardigan – Aritzia / Denim – Urban Outfitters

Every time I hear the word cerulean, I think of that infamous scene from The Devil Wears Prada where Miranda rips Andy a new one for calling two belts similar. It’s one of my favorite scenes from the film. I’m in this camp that I sometimes believe that you can make a photo out of anything – any wall, any backdrop, etc. But sometimes, I feel so compelled to some walls more than others. I love bold colors, prints, and things that you may not come across often. While I was in Seattle for the holidays, Veronica and I grabbed chili for lunch in Ballard – apparently at one of the oldest places ever known for its famous chili. Across the street was this cerulean wall and as soon as I saw it, I knew that THIS WAS IT. I didn’t bring a lot of clothes home with me when I returned for the holidays so this was pretty much my uniform every day.

Turtlenecks 4eva

Choker – Urban Outfitters / Turtleneck + Jacket – Aritzia / Denim – Forever21

If you would have told a younger me that in my late 20’s I’d be wearing a turtleneck, I would have probably laughed in your face. As cozy as they are, I never felt like I belonged in them. That was until… I met the one that I would fall in love with. So I’m pretty fortunate that since I’ve been living in California, I’ve gotten to know these girls at the Aritzia in Valley Fair quite well. Every few months or so when I need to revamp my wardrobe or shop for a special occasion, they are there for me. In fact, they’ve gotten to know my style so well these days that when I come in, they bring me pieces that they already know I’m going to like into the dressing room and more often then not, they end up being right! For example, this very sleek and chic turtleneck. It’s not your standard because it’s thin and sheer – two words you don’t normally use to describe turtlenecks. I also loved how this photographed. The sunlight makes it look so shiny! To elevate the classic look a little bit with the turtleneck tucked into denim, I added the choker and threw my hair back into a ponytail.

Take Me to the Farm!

Scarf and Leggings – Aritzia / Vest – Uniqlo / Mittens – Urban Outfitters / Boots – Hunter

Well what do you know, a Christmas time post in the month of May! We’re behind on outfit posts as usual, but it has always been a tradition to share my moments at the Christmas Tree Farm and this year is no different. I think these outfit posts are always a little bit funny because I end up bringing out the pieces that I rarely wear on the daily – like these BEAR mittens for example. Also, matching my outfit is not a priority hence this get up. It’s not about being stylish (well, it’s a little bit about being stylish) but it’s about being comfortable and having the appropriate attire to cut down a tree  watch Eric cut down the tree.

Because You’re 90’s

Top – Brandy Melville / Pants – Uniqlo / Chambray Shirt – Madewell / Necklace – Moorea Seal / Booties – Vince Camuto / Choker – Urban Outfitters

2016 and 2017 are the years in which I pay homage to my 90’s spirit. It’s too easy for me these days to create all-black outfits and as simple as it can be, it sometimes feels like something is missing. I guess this is why we have light jackets and accessories, right? With this outfit, I decided to add my favorite choker and this chambray from Madewell that I bought several years back. Oh! In addition to the choker, I decided to layer it with a gold necklace for contrast in length and color. This chevron necklace is from a boutique in Seattle called Moorea Seal!

What We Wore: Mandi’s Wedding

screen-shot-2017-03-01-at-10-30-21-am

Dress and Clutch – Urban Outfitters / Heels – Vince Camuto / Choker – Free People

If you follow me on Instagram and watch my stories, then you know that finding the perfect dress for the weddings I attend put a huge amount of pressure on me! I don’t expect anyone else to hold themselves to the standard that I set for myself, but I try my hardest to pick out dresses that balance three things, which isn’t always easy. The dress needs to make sense for the venue, needs to embody a little bit of the personality of the couple, and lastly – needs to stay true to my own style. The saying is true; when you are shopping for something specific, you do end up having the hardest time. I had done two shopping trips to look for the ideal dress for Mandi and Eric’s wedding and didn’t end up finding “the one” until the 3rd shopping trip. Even after putting it on and discovering it was the right fit, I still had my doubts! “Is this really the one?!” It was and to date, it’s my favorite dress that I’ve ever worn to a wedding.

After wearing a longer dress for Gelesia’s wedding, I was really feeling this length again. Since it was a fall wedding, I thought the delicate sleeves were very appropriate and the location of the venue really complimented the red and blue tones in the dress. The dress was sheer so it came with a navy slip underneath, but didn’t hit the bottom of the dress so the sheerness was still very visible in the bottom of the dress, which I loved! Did we mention that this was under $100? It’s what we always try to go for especially because after wearing one dress to a wedding and getting photographed in it can make it hard to repeat again at future events/weddings. For shoes, I wore my trusty Vince Camuto’s – I swear by these. And because I don’t shop for accessories too often, I used my Free People choker worn a little lower as a necklace and not a choker, which I bought in 2015 for my company’s holiday party. Since the dress was red and blue, I wanted to try and round things out with all the primary colors and opted for a bright yellow clutch that I had purchased from Urban Outfitters on sale back in college!

I did my own makeup and for hair, I had my friend Mary (who is amazing!) give me a very soft look to match with the dress. We were going to initially do declicate waves throughout, but since we were short on time, decided to do soft waves just on the ends in a subtle way and then take two pieces from the front, turn it into a braid and clip them in the back. How we managed to get this altogether in time for the ceremony still amazes me to this day. Also special shout out and thanks to Mary’s boyfriend who took all of these wonderful shots for me.

Comfortably Uncomfortable

screen-shot-2017-02-06-at-1-52-47-pm

Top – Aritzia / Denim – Urban Outfitters / Heels – Vince Camuto

How does one feel uncomfortable when just wearing a top and jeans? I can’t explain it, but it’s just how I feel! Believe me, I know that if I were to follow this rule every day while getting ready, my life would be a whole lot easier. It’s something that has never been able to sit right with us though. In this kind of outfit, I always feel like there is something missing. I’m fidgety, I squirm, and I feel like I’m wearing too few items to feel entirely comfortable. Hence, the reason for why I added the heels. I love owning masculine pieces in my closet and if you’ve ever been shopping with me, then you know I enjoy perusing a quality men’s boutique every now and then. However, this is an outfit that couldn’t just be paired with sneakers. I would’ve felt too short or too boy-ish so I popped on the heels. These are the same black heels that you see me wearing with most every day outfits, but also for when I’m dressing up too! They not only elevated me in height, but also made me feel more like myself.

Summer Getaway in LA

screen-shot-2017-01-31-at-3-46-53-pm

I had the opportunity to take a pretty last minute trip to Los Angeles this summer and every time I go back for a visit, the list of places to go continues to get longer. We were just there in fall of 2015 to see Gelesia, but even still it felt like there wasn’t enough time to do everything. On this trip, we checked out a few new places and returned to some of our old favorites! I’ve never imagined Los Angeles as a place that I could call home, but I wouldn’t mind spending an entire week there. We’ve still got plenty of neighborhood to explore. During our trip, we must have had four meals a day and only retreated back to the hotel for sleep and getting ready for the day/night’s activities. I know we’re six months away from summer, but we can’t wait to get back there already. I hope you enjoy our LA photo diary!

Our first meal off the plane was going to be Lemonade, but since I had heard that LA just got a Shake Shack, YOU KNOW I made us pivot. How good does this look?

Seattle Girl

screen-shot-2017-01-21-at-3-10-22-pm

Sub Pop Sweatshirt / Leggings – Aritzia / Cap – Urban Outfitters / Sneakers – Nike

This morning we woke up feeling both panicked and with a weight off our shoulders. It’s fitting that in our queue this was the next outfit that we would highlight. Even though this wasn’t recent, I remember how I felt on this day like it was yesterday. Simply weightless and so happy. We may not be 100% right now, but I’m really looking forward to getting back to this.

On the outfit: We’re really feeling that sporty casual look lately. It’s funny because you would’ve never caught me in an outfit like this in college, but as an adult, you just don’t need to dress up every single day. Sometimes you want to be comfy and cozy and believe it or not – Nikes can transform an outfit from sloppy to chick almost instantly.

Outside KEXP

screen-shot-2017-01-05-at-3-36-16-pm

Dress – Urban Outfitters / Jacket – Aritzia / Shoes – Vince Camuto

My dad and I were quite ambitious with our Seattle day over the summer and thought we would try and tackle a double header of visiting the Chihuly Museum, but also taking a tour of KEXP. It turns out… that we missed the KEXP tour, but I was still just as excited to see the new building even if it meant we didn’t get to go fully inside it. This mural outside of the building is also pretty neat. I’m really looking forward to doing the actual tour on my next visit though so that we can share it here! Also for those of you who don’t know, KEXP is a radio station in Seattle and we’ve actually blogged about them our fair share on Yow Yow typically for their concert series and for their in-studio live sessions.

Yow Yow! in Big Sur!

screen-shot-2017-01-01-at-5-01-25-pm

Living in the Bay Area has provided me with so many opportunities to have the quick getaways that I always wanted! In the 3 years that I’ve lived here, I’ve spent time in Napa, Sonoma, Tahoe, Sausalito, Monterey, and Carmel. It’s not like I was in the middle of nowhere when I was living in Seattle, but because I had lived there my whole life, I thought I had all the time in the world to explore places. The problem was that I never did. This is something I’ve taken advantage of more since moving. One of the places that I’ve been itching to get to was Big Sur. I knew it was close and on one of my long weekends from work, I knew it would be perfect for a day trip. I also was set on doing just about anything to see the Bixby Canyon Bridge. Death Cab for Cutie did that to us back in 2008. Sandeep and I set out in the morning and went straight to the beach for our shots. From there, we went to lunch and Glen Oaks, which I totally thought was going to be just a hike in the woods for us, but ended up being a hotel in the woods. Lucky for us, a jaunt around the grounds was about a mile anyways so…it was a mile long hike. Then on our way out – the bridge! We must’ve driven on it back and forth at least four times until we could find parking. We couldn’t leave without it though.

To end the day, Sandeep and I hit up Monterey on the way home for an Italian dinner and then made our way back to South Bay.
