Bay Area Eats:

After eating my favorite Fried Egg Sandwich from Plow two weekends in a row, I decided it was finally time to mix it up a little bit. Outerlands is a brunch spot that I have been itching to try for quite some time. After hearing such good things about it and having a friend that lives somewhat nearby, I decided to set up a date. It’s in the Sunset after all so there’s really no other reason to go over there other than this place. We may have waited nearly an hour or maybe an hour and a half or so to be seated, but it was worth it. Also, this is San Francisco and if you’re not waiting that long for brunch then you’re not going to a very good spot.

(That’s not exactly true, but sort of.)

I decided to order “Eggs in Jail” and for those of you who have been reading Yow Yow! for quite some time, you know that this is a meal that Veronica and I made almost every other week because we were just SO POOR! We were 22 years old and completely satisfied with the childhood meal of frying an egg into the middle of a piece of a toast. On a Friday night, we would each eat two of these, but not before accidentally burning and ruining two before we could eat.

Outerlands made our favorite dish even better by adding tomatoes, bacon, and what we think could be a cauliflower drizzle. We’re really not sure. What I am sure of is that I really loved this twist on a classic college meal. What a throwback!

Yow Yow’s Yearly Recap

Wowowow. What a year it has been for Yow Yow!

I’m not all that sad to see 2013 go because I am so looking forward to what 2014 has in store for us. 2013 was a big transition year for Yow Yow! Postings became a little bit more consistent because I was no longer in school and it started to become predictable that I would just log on right after work. It’s nice to be able to have a set schedule to be honest. When I was in school, I would post any free moment I had, which was great because maybe sometimes I would be inclined to write a post about something because it was convenient. However, I appreciate now, that I get to wait until the end of the day to sort out my thoughts and to spend some time thinking a little bit more about what I am writing. Yow Yow! has turned 5-years old! It’s hard to believe that this blog has been with me for that long and that some of you have watched me transition, grow, and hopefully write better content in that time. Thank you x 23984298 to everyone who has supported the blog during this time. If I didn’t have that, I may not still be writing today. We know for sure though that Jennie and Ashley have at least helped me keep Wedding Mondays alive.

Stats from 2012 will be on the left and italicized while stats from 2013 will be right and bold.

Hey readers,

In addition to Katie AND Cameron as writers for Yow Yow! I’ve also joined the blogging team. With Katie’s move to the Bay Area, Cameron and I will be covering Seattle to the best of our ability and keeping ya’ll updated. Also the PR Specialist, I can be found writing posts about music, movies, and sporadic findings on the interwebz.

When I’m not working my day job, I can be found reading, looking up the news for Yow Yow! coverage, and playing various sports around Seattle, in addition to going on adventures with my friends, that is.

Thanks for welcoming me to the team!

Where Does This Yow Yow Go?

tumblr_l89bw8LTcB1qzznboo1_500

Since I’ve announced my relocation, friends, family, and businesses that we have been collaborating with have been directing a very specific question towards me.

Where does Yow Yow! go from here?

I’ve been thinking about this for a very long time, long before I even received my job offer  and I have considered multiple options on how to make a very smooth transition for the blog. I HOBviously am not ready to let this go. This summer, we’ve been working harder than ever on our collaborations, on original content, and even creating more personal posts to give you a better idea of who I am outside of the blog. All of these things have been so important to me. For four years, Yow Yow! has very much been a huge part of my life bringing my relationships closer to me through content and expression. As readers, you have seen me go through four years of college, graduate college, start my professional career, and now relocate to a different city! That kind of thing in the blogging world is just unheard of. Regardless, I am so proud of how far we have come. With that said, I would like to let you all know that Yow Yow! is not going anywhere!

There will be several changes made to the blog, but for the most part things will be the same. The varied content that you’ve been seeing for years will still be just as random and tailored to all things I still like and enjoy writing about. Yow Yow! will also now be based in BOTH Seattle and the Bay Area , which means yes – I will start over again and begin reaching out to and working with Bay Area and San Francisco businesses. It won’t be easy, but it’s a challenge that I am ready to accept (right now.) Additionally, since I will have my hands full becoming well acquainted with the Bay Area, I am leaving Yow Yow! in the hands of two people that will keep the blog running in Seattle. As you all know Veronica Lim has been my partner in working with Yow Yow! for quite some time  but moreso officially announced this past summer. The girl knows this blog like the back of her hand and can give you the most accurate description of what Yow Yow! does and what it stands for to anyone that asks. Seriously, I make her do this every time we meet with someone new that we want to work with and it blows me away. Another contributor that you will be seeing on the blog is Cameron Deuel who made his debut on Yow Yow! just yesterday with his pre-Bumbershoot review post. Together they will both cover Seattle related-news and expand on our music section with original content.

I am so excited to finally be having contributors on Yow Yow! especially during this important transition time for me. Thank you all so much for your continued support and we can’t wait to share with you what ideas we have for the blog in the future.

Yow Yow! Visits DRY Soda

untitled-2-24

This post was written by Veronica Lim

Last month we were fortunate to sit down with DRY Soda’s Digital Marketing Manager, Garth Purkett, in the DRY Soda office found downtown in Pioneer Square. Not only did we want to learn about Garth’s day-to-day job at Dry Soda but also how the company came to be as well as where it’s going. Especially in this day and age of digital platforms where many businesses are utilizing resources such as Digital Marketing Serv pro and others like it, to create a presence online that can help them with their marketing efforts. If a business started many years ago like DRY Soda, they have had to learn to adapt, so it is interesting to see how this came about and what they did to shake up their plans.

Founded in 2005 by Sharelle Klaus, DRY Soda has been working out of Pioneer Square since 2007. In a cozy, yet modern office, visitors are immediately greeted with a tasting bar the moment they walk through the doors. The rest of the office is lined with cases of soda along bright orange walls, reflecting a playful and creative space.

Initially intended for white cloth table dining, DRY Soda has transformed into a food-focused demographic that still ultimately aims for being a better soda. As we sat down with Garth, we learned about his daily tasks – which include running contests, day-to-day graphic design, and running DRY Soda’s social media. Rather than typical posts and hype, Garth tries to, “create fun content that actually matters to people.”

This mentality is what led DRY Soda to current Creative Director, Richard Blais, Top Chef All-Star. Richard first discovered DRY Soda at Ace Hotel in New York. While tweeting about National Left Handers day, Garth caught Richard’s attention and eventually looped Sharelle into the conversation.

Gearing towards a food-focused demographic, Richard plays a large role in introducing new flavors. Only seven flavors were available in bottles up until July 1st when cans and new flavors were launched. The new form factor being cans provide more opportunity for followers to buy the soda where glass bottles may not make most sense. Right now, apple and ginger are the newest addition to the DRY Soda family.

Making innovation a priority, Garth eagerly shared with us an app available for smart phone users. The app features wine pairings, cocktail recipes, food pairings, as well as a store locator making DRY Soda even more accessible.

When asked what separates DRY Soda from neighbor Jones Soda, Garth notes that the company is about:

  • Keeping it simple
  • Keeping the flavors interesting – flavor forward
  • Keeping it culinary focused

Because, “Every sip leaves you ready for the next one.”

Garth and the rest of the team don’t show any signs of slowing down. For now, the DRY Soda team is focused on cans and developing new flavors. To find out more about DRY Soda, check them out here or reach out to them via Twitter at @DRYSoda.

Collaboration Preview:

dry soda

I am so excited to announce to you all that Yow Yow! is collaborating with Seattle’s own Dry Soda! Veronica and I have been hard at work  planning out companies that we would like to reach out to and collaborate with and Dry Soda is one that stood out to us. Today, we took a field trip down to their office and tasting room in Pioneer Square to sit with Garth Purkett, Dry Soda’s Digital Marketing Manager. We were amazed to learn how Dry Soda came to be and where they’re going. Soon, we’ll post up our interview with Garth along with photos of our visit shot by my friend Elliot Suhr.

The companies that come out of Seattle are incredible and we can’t wait to have the opportunity to work with others in the area.

Mayer Hawthorne on Jimmy Fallon

Yesterday was a very special day for Veronica, Charles, and I. Not only were we celebrating Veronica’s belated birthday at one of our old stomping ground restaurants in Capitol Hill, but we were also celebrating the release of Mayer Hawthorne’s latest album “Where Does This Door Go?” Two years ago, the three of us booked him for our college’s music festival and to this date, it’s still one of the things in my previous life as a booker that I am so proud of – mostly because…it’s just nuts and that life is insane! Our boy Mayer performed his single “Her Favorite Song” on Jimmy Fallon last night so check it out here!

How To Reach Yow Yow:

tumblr_kxxeq8WmZr1qzyrwvo1_500

Hello!

Lately, we’ve been working towards building up Yow Yow! As some of you may have noticed, my posting schedule has changed and now you’re waking up to posts instead of just viewing them late in the evenings. Additionally, we’re working with other people and continuing our interviews. The workload has gotten to be too much for me to take on all by myself so we’re bringing one of my good friends – Veronica – onto the team.

She is my official PR person!

What does that mean exactly?

If you are interested in working with Yow Yow! for:

  • Events
  • Product Reviews
  • Sponsored posts
  • Collaborations
  • etc.

Please email Veronica[at]itsyowyow.com

Additionally, if you have any other general/blogging questions, you can reach me at the same address – replacing Veronica’s name with mine or on Twitter.

Welcome, Veronica Lim!

3

Good morning everyone!

I am so excited to announce this morning that Yow Yow! has hired a PR Specialist and Veronica Lim is really no stranger to Yow Yow! For years, she has been my right-hand woman helping me come up with ideas behind the scenes, filming my promo video, photographing Space Girl, and letting me know when a sentence I’ve written is either off or should be deleted entirely. This blog could not function fully without her help and in the last couple of months, I have realized that I have needed more than just a hand. Having a day job often times does not allow me to focus on Yow Yow! as much as I would like. After work, my time is spent catching up on news for the day and writing posts when what I want to be doing is reaching out, initiating collaborations, and interacting with all of you! Veronica is coming on board to assist me in those areas and having worked together on this blog more times than I can count and also in our professional lives, there is no better person for this job than her.

Please join me in welcoming her to the team!

How We Yow Yow!

[vimeo http://vimeo.com/64044836]

For the past couple of months Veronica and I have had this “itch” to be creative. It was something that we felt like we were missing in our lives, but that was such a huge part of who we were as people. While working together throughout college, we took advantage of opportunities when we had the chance, but probably not as much as we should have. It’s how Space Girl was born and it’s how our videos were born.

As we venture into these new chapters in our lives and we take Yow Yow! a little bit further, we figured the best way to do it was with a video. For four years, I’ve been the sole blogger and owner of Yow Yow! but I’ve also been behind the scenes. If Seattle U has taught me anything it has been to be vulnerable, to love what you do, and own what you love. That’s what we’re going to do from now on.

Thank you for all of the support over the years. Please do us a favor by sharing this video with your friends to help spread the word and to help Yow Yow! take off!
