Fall Shoot

Sweater – Margaret O’Leary / Dress – Aritzia / Bag – Madewell / Shoes – Vince Camuto

If you’ve been following Yow Yow! since the very beginning, then you know that getting in front of the camera wasn’t always easy for me. To this day, I still don’t know what do with my hands or my arms. And when it comes to smiling? I’m the biggest critic for myself. If it has to do with clothes and fashion, I’m enjoying the photographs more to remember and look back on some of my favorite outfits. It has been nearly half a year since these photos were taken, but I’m so excited to share them with all of you.

I know that tech can leave a bad taste in some peoples’ mouths especially in San Francisco, but one of my favorite things about it is its ability to bring a community together. I have connected with so many people on Instagram in the most unique and interesting ways and that’s how I met [Kiyah]. She happened to be in SF the week that she reached out to me and we agreed to meet for a quick shoot as the sun was going down in the Mission District. I’d only ever shot with people I knew or from my own iPhone with my friends that I had to convince to shoot for me. I was curious how I might be in front of the camera with someone that I’d just met and surprised to find how effortless it was. It felt like we were old friends and this shoot ended up being the highlight of my week.

This is a topic that I want to continue in a later post, but I want to start it here. For years, there has been talk about how social media inaccurately portrays a person’s life and how this makes other people feel. The answer? Not great. It makes people feel like their life doesn’t amount to those that are living what looks like their BEST life on their feeds. It makes people feel like they are missing out. Many of us choose to not post in our most vulnerable states or when we are unhappy. As you may have read in a previous post, I don’t post very much at all when I’m not as happy in my own life. This photoshoot with Kiyah will always stick with me because on this day that I met her, I had just been in tears at work that same morning. I woke up and got ready so that I could be in good shape by the time we shot only to have my makeup run almost completely off by the end of the day. When I look at these photos, I can see that I’m not my usual bubbly self even through some of those smiles, but I often times wonder if other people will/can notice. Internally, I knew that I was off my game and while this is one example in my life, this isn’t the only example. Thanks to Kiyah’s amazing work and talent, she really helped us pull this off. I enjoyed my time with Kiyah so much that we agreed to meet again the next time she’s here in SF. To view more of her work, click [here] to visit her website.

Under Construction

Top – Madewell / Pants – Aritzia / Heels – Vince Camuto

Every blogger strives to find that perfect backdrop for their photos and it’s true, I like to do the same sometimes. Other times though, I would prefer to just capture outfits in the natural setting that I’m in. Near my old office, there was a lot of construction being done. It was in the quieter part of the Mission and sometimes it was a little bit rough. There were a few gems sprinkled in the mix though. It wasn’t always the prettiest of backdrops, but we worked with what we had and I loved it! For those of you who follow me on Instagram, you know that I love the location below where all of the MUNI buses live. It was forbidden to get further into the lot because there was always an attendant there and watching me, but I pushed the boundaries each time.

Our Old Neighborhood

Tee – Aritzia / Denim – Levi’s / Shoes – Vince Camuto

There was never a shortage of backdrops in my old neighborhood. Moving day was approaching so I knew I had to get in every last drop. I wanted to make the most of every opportunity that I had in this neighborhood before leaving this story behind and starting a new and exciting chapter. With backdrops like this, it was particularly hard for me to make the decision to move home in the first place, but some things just need to be done. For my own good if not for anything else.

I was skeptical. I had heard from a couple of my friends that moving house is the hardest process that anyone has to deal with in their lifetime. That and getting married and having children. So before I even contemplated starting the process, I made the decision to read the reviews of people similar to these best Vancouver realtors who would be able to help assist me with everything that came with moving home. I was clueless about the whole process, in all honesty, so being able to lean on someone who has all the relevant knowledge and expertise would really make the process a whole lot easier for me. Looking back, now that I have found the perfect house, I’m glad I have made the decisions that I did. But it still doesn’t make leaving this neighborhood and these backdrops any easier.

So, I wanted to make sure I had the most perfect memories to take with me before moving day eventually came around. On this evening one day after work, we actually shot in five different areas (4 only included in this post.) The Mission neighborhood tends to be one of the warmest ones in the city so after work, I’m always ready to leave my jackets behind. I’m wearing a plain white Aritzia tee with a completely open back. It’s a little bit too racy for work so I had a cardigan over it the entire day until we shot. This outfit should be my daily uniform because it’s functional and just the right amount of comfort for anything I’d ever need to do.

I’ll let you know how moving day goes. I’m trying not to worry about it too much just yet as it will just stress me out even more than it should. As my parents always told me, I should take each day as it comes. And once I’ve been able to get in touch with somewhere like these USF Moving Companies, I know that a lot of pressure will suddenly disappear, as my friend has used them for various different moving occasions of her own, and has never had a bad word to say. This fills me with hope, at least. I’m nervous yet very excited at the same time. And, if I decide to wear an outfit like the one in the picture, I’m sure everything will go off without a hitch.

Little Jumper

Top – Forever21 / Romper – Oak + Fort / Shoes – Vince Camuto / Sunglasses – Marc Jacobs

Quick! Put on display your least attractive body part. I don’t know what compelled me to throw this pose up highlighting my elbows, but that’s what we got. If I had to look back on 2017, this outfit is definitely what I would call “a risk.” As some of you may know, rompers haven’t always been a hit with me. I was very skeptical for a couple of years and especially when they were a “peak” trend, but I gave it a shot. In fact, I gave it two shots because I own a couple of them now. For some reason, I woke up this morning and though “hmm, maybe I’ll layer it over a tee.” This actually didn’t turn out that bad, but when photographed incorrectly or at the wrong angle, it can become the least flattering outfit that I own. It’s a fun outfit to run around in the city in, but maybe not the best choice for work or on a scorching hot day like this day happened to be.

Our Favorite Looks of 2017

Duster – Azalea / Tee – Abercrombie & Fitch / Pants – Uniqlo / Boots – J. Crew

Sure, these are my 12 favorites look of the year, but they also overlap with 12 of my favorite backdrops from the year! If you’re someone who documents your OOTD’s, then you know that these two things kind of go hand in hand. This year, I experienced a major shift in my outfits and that is mostly due to a location change. Living in South Bay was a dream, but it meant that I was living in this sort of alternate reality where it was summertime every single day. The last four years of that are something that I would never give back, but now that I’m living in San Francisco, I’m glad that I get to dress for true weather. It reminds me of my days in Seattle.

In 2017, I embraced a very casual look and I pushed the boundaries of day to night wear. I showed love to some of my favorite accessories (bandana, baseball cap, choker) and revived some old favorites (Keds!) We didn’t find ourselves immersed in any crazy trends… but I did find some pieces worn by other people on Instagram that I went out and bought myself! It’s not really the same thing, you guys. It’s almost… worse.

Washed Out

Cardigan – J. Crew / Denim – Levi’s / Booties – Vince Camuto

Is this not the biggest eye sore you’ve ever seen in your life?! I remembered seeing this garage and thinking this is not the backdrop that I would ever want, but it’s so interesting and reminds me of a jack-o-lantern that you just can’t not. I’m convinced that no outfit in front of could make this better, but here we are! I’m in the most neutral of tones and still loving this. Another reason why this is so funny is because the top and bottom photo are edited in two different ways. It’s because I couldn’t find an edit that I was happiest with. You’re an imperfect garage, but someone really does love you enough to not change you.

Petal Power

Dress – Aritzia / Cardigan – Mom’s / Shoes – Vince Camuto / Bag – Madewell

When I was commuting up to the city for work from South Bay, one of the things that I enjoyed the most was catching all of the morning light and sometimes the middle of a sunrise to start the day. Maybe it was because I was arriving to work early or maybe it was just because it was summer and there was more light in general. These days, I can definitely feel winter coming on and I’m looking forward to the days when I can pull out my open-toed heels to wear again to work. For now, I’ll just take the wool socks.

Let’s Taco ’bout It

Beanie – Aritzia / T-shirt – Urban Outfitters / Duster – Azalea / Denim – Citizens of Humanity / Heels – Vince Camuto

Up until this day, I had never really thought of putting all of these items together. This combination of a long duster with the high-waisted jeans and the addition of heels fascinated me. It was casual with a side of fancy and I didn’t hate it. My company recently moved offices and while I was SO ready to move, there were a lot of gems in our old spot that I probably will miss. One of those things is our various lunch outings. On this particular day, we decided to walk up the street to a food truck serving Mexican food that we had heard great things about. I can still remember my chicken quesadilla with extra guac pretty vividly!
