Critics’ Choice Awards 2018

Gal Gadot in Prada

It is only just the beginning for award show season, but doesn’t it feel like we’re moving fast already? As much as we loved the classic black attire for last week’s Golden Globes, this week’s Critics’ Choice Awards is welcoming us back with more color in our lives. We don’t have many looks to share, but the ones we are sharing are ones we love!

2018 Golden Globes Red Carpet

Normally, I start this post as soon as the awards show ends, but I knew that this year was going to take a little bit longer. In fact, I cleared the entire rest of my night to write this post because I wanted to take extra care of it. I also didn’t want to fuck this up. Before we get into what everyone wore, I want to say how difficult it is to write this post. Everyone. EVERYONE was extremely beautiful and elegant and this year, it wasn’t about the gowns at all because the color black symbolized something more. It was a movement of women who stood together supporting each other against sexual harassment, sexual assault, gender inequality, unequal pay for women, and so much more. Why is this list even as long as it is? It’s frustrating, isn’t it? We’re also not focusing on significant others and dates to the awards show because this year many actresses chose to bring along with them activists and strong women in this world who are leading these efforts everywhere.

This time around, we’re going to do things a little bit differently. What will stay the same – the photos and the designer. But I’m keeping my critiques to myself because I just don’t think that on a night like this and an award show as amazing as this one was this evening, that we need any more criticism towards women and how they are dressed. And maybe we’ll choose to continue to do it this way from now on.

What I’m really excited to focus on in this post is how these stylists and actresses rose up to the challenge of wearing these black gowns and making it their own. They added pops of color, accessorized, and emphasized their hair and makeup instead of letting the gowns speak entirely for them. Except in a way, they did – powerfully. It will be hard to select my favorites, which I’ll share on my Instagram Stories later on this evening.

And while this evening was moving and inspiring, it’s a reminder to me that there’s still a lot of work to do. That there are men in that audience that are not supporters and instead abusers that have not been called out yet. That while we shifted the focus on the red carpet to not ask about who they were wearing, reporters were not asking enough men about what they were going to do to support the #TimesUp movement or how they felt about it. Very few wore anything, but black on the red carpet, but is this the same “fall-in-line” culture just repeating itself again? Also, wearing a uniform black dress doesn’t solve the problem(s). In high school, these sort of things were just called spirit days. (sorry was that harsh)

There’s a lot to unpack probably in the coming months, but we don’t gotta do that tonight…

Golden Globe Awards 2017

Viola Davis in Michael Kors Collection

I spent a great deal of time today glued to my TV. Those hours of the red carpet and the actual award show aren’t hours that I can get back. My two takeaways? Well, I didn’t watch enough good movies in the last year and everyone that tried to pull off a long-sleeved dress this year on the red carpet failed. I did have a couple of favorite looks though and they came from those that surprised me! I always like doing this post the night of the award show so that people can have something to scroll through when morning comes around so with that here are my favorite looks as well as those that missed the mark.

I’m actually tired of this trend with dresses being one shouldered and have been for awhile, however, I love this color on Viola and she looks stunning. I also like that she decided to simplify both her and makeup so that the dress could just do its thing. The head-scratching moment of the night for this dress was when Ryan Seacrest asked her what color her dress was while everyone at home was like “um, can’t you tell what color this is?”

Sarah Jessica Parker wearing Vera Wang

Very rarely am I ever impressed by anything SJP wears. She looks like a marshmallow in this gown and I’m not happy with the way she styled her hair. The only way this look could redeem itself is if it were sleeveless and her hair were let down.

20th Annual SAG Awards 2014

Jennifer Lawrence in Dior Haute Couture

YES, this is the dress that I would have loved to see Jennifer in at the Golden Globes, but better late than never. We all know that Jennifer is partial to Dior so it’s a no-brainer, but the slim fit and dark color is doing wonders for her on the red carpet. We’re pretty happy with this pick.

Met Gala 2011

François-Henri Pinault with Salma Hayek both in Alexander McQueen

There was an unbelievable amount of love for Alexander McQueen and Stella McCartney at this year’s 2011 Met Ball. I think out of all the Met Ball’s I have seen, this one has provided the most looks that I have fallen in love with. Well done everyone.

This year’s theme was in tribute to the late designer Alexander McQueen as the museum debuted a new exhibition in his name. Since there were so many attendees this year, I decided to post only my favorite looks (and a few others)  – don’t worry, it’s still pretty image heavy!

Where was Camilla Belle this year?

2011 People’s Choice Awards

Ashley Tisdale in Farah Angsana

I haven’t rated looks in forever, but I might just start up again. I give this look a 4.7 because I am loving her resort-esque dress even during the winter time. The blend of chartreuse and pink in the dress help bring out her warm skin tone and are really quite complimentary to the entire look itself. She also gets points for doing the boho look without looking homeless hippy.
