U.S. Deaths Near 100,000, An Incalculable Loss

By now, most of you have seen this image of the front page of the New York Times for today. It’s the one thing that I keep seeing all over my social media. I saw it for the first time last night along with this tweet:

I thought about sharing the photo on the left with a comment about how we’ve social distanced long enough so everyone go nuts this weekend. To be clear, I’m being sarcastic; I don’t actually believe that. But as I spent minutes staring at this photo, I decided snark wasn’t the way to go late into the night. This image alone is powerful enough. But that won’t fix the divide that is tearing across America as people continue to show different standards for social distancing. For me, it feels both annoying and frustrating that even those closest to me and I cannot align.

Memorial Day Weekend is going to be the ultimate test, isn’t it? As I think about how many days into shelter-in-place we are, I wonder what this weekend’s setback will do to our country. Are we reopening too soon? Are we going to reopen only to have to restrict once again? I know in the end I have to make decisions that are best for me and my household. Seeing these names along with these one line obituaries should scare you. I don’t want this list to continue to grow and these people deserve so much more of a remembrance than what this is. They can’t because people keep dying and this magnitude of a list doesn’t do them justice. Here is where we stand with all of this on some of the more current pieces:

Vox on Coronavirus

In the last few weeks, I’ve read and watched so many different articles and videos on Covid-19. As of today, the city of San Francisco declared a shelter in place which means that we’re not allowed to leave our homes unless it’s to a grocery store, bank, to get gas, go to a pharmacy or a hospital. Walks are allowed, but you need to be six feet away from any other person. Since this video was created today, I figured it would be the most relevant to share this as early as I can.

There are many more thoughts that I have on Covid-19 that I plan on writing about in the coming weeks here. Some of you won’t want to see this or you think we should stick to our usual content. To ignore what’s happening to us completely makes us seem unaware and maybe even a little irresponsible. I hope you’ll be okay with us splitting the content for the time being!

Why Safe Playgrounds Aren’t Great For Kids

I loved this little bite sized clip. Obviously, it’s not something that I considered or even thought of while growing up, but it makes so much sense. Playgrounds are designed to keep kids safe and while there is imagination there, there is a block as well. It does prevent us from really letting that creativity fly.

Why Ramen Is So Valuable In Prison

I actually remember seeing this referenced within “Orange is the New Black” and always wondered what the meaning behind this was. Even after watching, I’m still fascinated by this and feel like I need to do more research. I’ve been enjoying these shorts by Vox lately. Any one else have any favorites I should look into?
