Count Em’ 1, 2… 60? 2018

Writing this post already has me excited to share with you all my favorite albums from the year. I’m using Spotify’s Year in Review as my crutch, but also combing through my own playlists to make sure that I include my favorite 60 songs from the year. As some of you know, I make a new playlist for every season. For the last couple of years, I’ve kept all of these playlists, but don’t return to them very often. In an effort to make sure I’m adding the new and looking back on some of the old, I’ve decided that whichever season I’m in, that I’d revisit my playlists from that season from years prior. For example, while making Fall 2018, I went back and listened to all my fall playlists starting with Fall ’11/’12.

Sometimes I am completely confused at how a certain song made it onto my playlist back then. Even if it’s not something I would listen to now, I still leave it for funny moments like these. Will any of my favorites from 2018 match up with yours? As always, these are in no particular order. One thing you may notice this year though is that 2018 is the year for women. Many of the songs I listened to the most and put out albums that I had on repeat were by incredibly strong and fierce women.

Enjoy!

My Time Off and Everything That It Taught Me

I might be known for being someone that often makes big decisions without thinking them through entirely. Isn’t that what keeps things exciting though? I recently decided to leave my job and as I was figuring out my next move, I knew one thing for sure. I wanted some time off for funemployment. It wasn’t quite clear to me yet if I had enough “rainy day” money saved up, but I just knew that I would be okay. Unfortunately, we do always have to think about money and finances though. I was worried about how much money I had saved, but I decided to prioritize myself instead. I needed a break. I was confident that I would be able to make this money back in the future by looking into investments, for example. That’s a popular way of making more money in the future, so that is something that I might consider. One of my friends actually invests in Bitcoin. She uses Bitcoin Trader to trade her cryptocurrency investment to try and increase its value. She hopes that this will give her more money in the future. Maybe that is something I should look into. This little break has taught me that I am going to need to make some more money before I think about retiring! The other thing that I had wanted as part of my time off was to take a mini vacation. It would have been so easy to go back home to Seattle, but I wanted to use this time to explore an area that I hadn’t been before and get out of the city.

The time off was a rollercoaster. It flew by incredibly fast, but it taught me so much in so little time. I can’t wait to share with you below just what those lessons were. One thing I will say though is that this felt like a true vacation versus being employed and having a vacation which are two very different things. In my career, the work never stops and I’ve been known to respond to emails and take urgent calls at all hours of the day even while on vacation. I’m happy to report that some of my biggest decisions that I had to make during my time off were mainly around what I was going to have for lunch or dinner.

1. Back Pocket Money

Let’s revisit that money thing again, shall we? When I was working, I roughly knew about how much I was spending a day for my daily latte, commute, and lunch. On my time off, I thought I could save more because I would be eliminating the commute, but naturally, that budget got rerouted to other things… like clothes, snacks, random things I thought I needed. Since I wouldn’t be working, I also thought I could eliminate coffee, but that proved to be more challenging than I thought. My body was so used to it every day that not having caffeine gave me a slower start to the day or required an afternoon nap. I had to keep a close watch on my budget which meant no excessive spending and being weary of the bills I still had to pay without a check coming in. Even with that in mind, there are some things you can’t predict! That thing was dropping my phone and shattering the screen even WITH the glass screen protector I had on it. It happened right before I was about to leave for my trip and I knew I couldn’t go on it without a phone, but as you can imagine, it was not cheap. My heart sunk having to go through with this, but what other choice did I have?

2. Thinking about nothing is relieving

Every day was a new day for me and not every day came with a challenge. Each morning I woke up with somewhat of a plan of what I wanted to tackle, but I wasn’t on a deadline for it. For the first time in my life, I felt very much in control of my own decision making. My brain felt relaxed and that was a relief. In the moment, it may have felt like mindless activity for the duration, but I knew that this time off was actually preparing me to start work again. If I had left my position and jumped into something immediately, I wouldn’t have had the time I needed to decompress. This may be the recruiter in me saying this, but I do think it’s important to have some space between jobs so that you can properly close the chapter on one story before opening another. On my list of favorite decisions to make: deciding on lunch or dinner, picking out floral arrangements for my vase, and deciding which series I wanted to binge watch on Netflix.

3. Yow Yow! got to have its moment

For years, I always said that Yow Yow! had to take a backseat to the rest of my life because it always came in second to my education and career. It made me wonder for the longest time if I could ever cut it out as a full time writer/blogger. Now that I had this time, I wanted to give it a shot. I wanted to wake up every day and have the space and time to come up with the content I wanted to share. I wrote more posts in this span of time than I ever have during a normal vacation or winter break. The most important part for me was that I never felt rushed. I could spend time with my words and if I could have this all the time while juggling a career, I would be perfectly content. It was incredibly fun to do, but it led me a bigger revelation I had for myself.

4. When it was time to go back to work

One discovery that I had was that as much as I loved working on Yow Yow! I wasn’t having the same impact with writing that I had had in my career with recruiting. Yow Yow! was peaceful, but isolating. It also led me to more creative blocks; something that I don’t face in my career. I started to miss the hustle and bustle of being back in the office, juggling a dozen things at once and having a day that was completely unpredictable. I needed the break sure, but I knew I wasn’t ready for retirement any time soon. Funemployment showed me that there was more growth to be had in my career and new challenges that I wanted to hit.

Tomorrow is day one again and it feels exactly like the first day of school. I know I won’t be able to sleep tonight. I’ve got “eagles” in my stomach (virtual high five if you can nail that reference) and of course, I feel unprepared! One of my biggest worries is that even though it was a short amount of time in some people’s eyes, that I’ll feel rusty going back. Here’s hoping that I can pick up my LinkedIn Recruiter again like a bicycle!

When Your Blog Is Broke

For what feels like a month, my blog has been somewhat broken. It’s not that I haven’t had time to fix it, but it’s complex enough that I need a solid chunk of time to work on it. For one thing, the sharing functions for every post that I write are no longer embedded in and if I want to share, I have to do it manually. On a scale of 1-10, I consider that to be not as major. The other problem though is that I’m no longer able to view my stats. I have no idea how many people are reading my posts or stopping by Yow Yow! every day. Initially this stressed me out. I’m a numbers and metrics person and I’ve always had that resource available to me ever since I started Yow Yow! As weeks went on and I lagged on getting this fixed, I started to realize that not knowing sort of gave me peace of mind. I could write freely without having to examine every stat and what it meant especially if most of the time it didn’t mean much.

Over time, I realized the blog stats were what I over examined before I even was introduced to things like Instagram and likes and hearts. In the past couple of weeks, I’ve just been able to focus on the writing and more importantly what I’m happy to write about instead of the stress of how certain pieces are performing. It has been a nice period of time (almost a time of innocence if you will) and I’m going to enjoy for it now, but soon we’ll get these stats back because it’s important to have data and it’s important to know how you can improve. Having just recently gone under a makeover with Yow Yow, it’s still crucial for me to track these things!

Happy Birthday Yow Yow!

A few days ago, I turned Yow Yow! off to give it a bit of a face lift. I didn’t think anyone would notice since we’ve been a relatively quiet blog for the last few years. The blog was down for less than a week and even though we’ve been gone for much longer periods of time, it was still a weird feeling. I would come home after work and all I could do was just consume content. I didn’t have a place to share it and I didn’t want to mess with the migration that was being done so I just stayed quiet. There was a part of this process that was so freeing. What if I just didn’t have Yow Yow! and I had a normal life where this wasn’t sometimes my hobby or “double life?” I think about this retiring moment often and obviously, this isn’t it today, but I often think about how hard it will be to let go.

Yow Yow’s Top 10 Posts of 2017

It isn’t hard to push out a post when I need to. They can range from anything to a YouTube video to a song on Spotify or a quote against a printed background in an interesting typeface on Pinterest. While I like to think that varying lengths of posts make Yow Yow! really interesting, it’s those essays that I spend the most time on that I’m proud of. 2017 was a year of changes not only for me personally, but for Yow Yow! There was a lot happening in the world that I wanted to share an opinion about and I’ll admit, I don’t always get it right. I’ve received some criticism over the last year for some of the pieces that I’ve written, which challenged me, but I also received positive feedback as well. Overall, it felt like a step in the right direction. As much as I love writing about food, music, and fashion, I can’t let Yow Yow! only be about that. And the reason why is just because that’s not what I’m only all about. Thank you all for letting me stretch my creativity with this and for continuing to stick with us.

COUNT EM’ 1, 2… 60? 2017

This is always one of my favorite year-end round up lists to write! Throughout the years, I’ve had so many different platforms that I’ve used to listen to music. It started when I was young just listening to the radio with my tape ready to record a track – making mix tapes the old school way. From there, Kevin and I graduated to downloading songs off the internet (c’mon everyone did it!) then to iTunes, websites like SoundCloud, and then Spotify. How I lived a life without Spotify previously is beyond me. Last year, I relied heavily on the playlist that they had curated for me highlighting my top 100 tracks based on plays from the last year. I listened to mine for 2017 as well and while I think that it is mostly correct, I’m so OCD that I need to cross check it with my own list to make sure that it is 100% accurate. 2017 was such a great year for music and I can’t wait to share with you my favorites below! Farewell, REDEFINE

Sometime after Yow Yow! was born, my brother had connected me to a young woman named Vivian Hua. She ran her own music and arts magazine and I thought she was a badass. I had already been writing for Yow Yow! on the side, but I HAD to be a part of her project and what she was doing. Through REDEFINE, I covered Capitol Hill Block Party and Bumbershoot both back in 2012. They were my very first press passes ever and soon after that allowed me to pave the way for my own press passes for Yow Yow! REDEFINE wasn’t the first place that I had seen my name in a byline before, but it was the first place that truly meant something to me. I was able to combine my love for both writing and music into one and it was exciting. My stint with REDEFINE as a contributing writer only lasted a year, but it was a fun experience to say the least. We were super pumped to check off another box within music.

Thank you Vivian for giving this opportunity to me and many writers and we wish you the best of luck on your future endeavors!

My Favorite Posts of 2016

Typically when I write “end-of-year” posts, I’m always pulling up what I wrote the year before in another tab as a reference. I already know that I didn’t do too much writing this year so it will be ambitious to find 12 posts that I really liked as opposed to last year when that feeling was so easy for me! That being said, I think there are going to be a few treasures in here that we can highlight. They may not be the posts that rank to the top in terms of views, but they are the posts that I enjoyed writing the most and the ones that you know I probably re-read a dozen times before feeling comfortable posting. Thank you all for another fantastic year… now let’s head into our 8th year of Yow Yow! This blog is now older than my previous Polly Pocket collection (7 years!)

  • This Happened Tonight – I honestly don’t know if this is enough to consider it one of my favorite posts, but this is me totally just fangirling out over here. It might be on my list of funny moments in 2016, but whatever the case – this needed to belong on SOME list and I chose this. I think I like this post just because it reminds me a little bit of how I used to write in the old days – you know back in 2009/2010 – no filter – just blagh! whatever I felt like spewing out at the time. If you read the post though (and you know me!) then you know I’m suppressing my feelings here for the sake of appearing normal on Yow Yow! If only this weren’t so short lived…

  • Happy 7th Birthday Yow Yow! – We’ve never celebrated a Yow Yow! anniversary like this before. The number 7 has no significance to me or Yow Yow! but after all this time, you kind of just feel like you need to do something different. We were already doing regular outfit photos, so I thought – why not throw in a balloon?! One of the best parts about this post is that Aritiza decided to feature this photo above for their Instagram account. I was ecstatic, but very quickly commenters started to notice that the balloon didn’t actually look like a “7” and actually looked like… male genitalia. So almost immediately, my excitement did a 180.

  • Looking Back: Space Girl – It’s a weird thing to be in front of a camera. I’m not a natural by any means. Every shoot, Elynn probably takes on average 15-25 photos and while we sometimes get 2-3 really good ones, the rest are of me opening my mouth, fixing my clothes, talking, being awkward, you name it. We’ve come such a long way… this post was incredibly special to me though. Space Girl was everything to me when we were in college. I never could get comfortable in front of the camera and having this helmet on made me feel invincible. When we stopped using it and went back to outfit shoots, you can plainly see how hard it is for me in these photos, but I will never forget the gateway that Space Girl provided for me to get me to where we are today.

  • Wedding Mondays – I know what you’re thinking. How can you choose a favorite? We’ve highlighted so many incredible wedding videos in 2016, but one that I keep going back to (in addition to Mandi’s of course!) is this one featuring Jean (from Extra Petite) and her husband Nick. To this day, we still can’t wrap our head around the three dresses, but we think it’s amazing. Secondly, Long Haul films is no longer doing wedding videos so that makes this one extra special. (see what I did there?) Also, when I was in Boston this past fall for work, I got to stop by the Boston Library and see this venue myself and we fangirled the  same amount we did for BJ Novak. It was just as amazing in person as it is in the video…

  • Revisiting Casual – I like to look at “Casual” as something we continue to pass on. Every year, I’ve gotta share it with someone new and last year that was Manan. Together, him and I watched the entire series from start to finish and he loved it as much as I did! No surprises there – everyone I’ve ever shown this too has fallen in love with the series so it’s not too late if you decide to hop on the bandwagon. We’re still accepting fan club members. In all honesty, relationships are hard, okay? I’m never 100% content with mine and in 2016 it’s tough to date. If I knew in the long run that I was going to be okay then I would love to have that off my shoulders, but if Casual has taught me anything and if life has taught me anything – it’s that it’s all about timing. We have to let things play out the way they are supposed to. Thank you Casual for continuing to be a positive force in my life year after year.

  • And When We Give Back – It was such a surreal experience to be speaking with students that had been accepted to Seattle University as the class of 2020. Let that sink in a little bit. When I was a kid, I used to think that college was almost the end all be all. It was hard for me to imagine being a woman with a career – not because I didn’t want to have a career, but because it just seemed so far away. I’m fortunate that my friend who works at admissions asked me to do this panel because it put a lot into perspective. It was a very humbling experience to be giving advice to students as to why Seattle U was a great school for me even though I kind of do this in my real life job too. Additionally, it made me appreciate my parents in a way that I haven’t before. Seeing the parents of these accepted students was a little bit entertaining; they were SO nervous. I wondered how my parents were able to handle me going off to college with such ease and tranquility when that is very clearly not the case for most.

  • To Be a “Leftover” Woman in China – Never have I ever ugly-cried so hard over a YouTube video, but this struck a chord with me. It’s 2016 and the pressures of settling down or being in a committed relationship are still very much a priority for most. It’s overwhelming at times! I loved hearing the stories of these young women – young women that I can identify with and find to be so brave for doing something like this. I’m glad the video had a happy ending too, a newfound perspective for their parents.
  • A Girl and Her Bed – I never write pieces like this and I remembered being very on the fence about it because it seems abnormal for me to dispel some serious feelings about a part of my daily routine. In reading it over though, I think the post is kind of beautiful. I’m using words that I don’t normally use and I’m being vulnerable in a way that I haven’t with Yow Yow! before.

  • “The Panic in Central Park” – Is this my favorite TV moment in 2016? Yes. I must have watched this episode at least 25 times and at one point, once a day for a week. We had given up on Girls the season before this one, but after hearing about how much commotion this episode stirred, we hopped back into it. Luckily, for this episode, you didn’t need to know what was happening before it. It was like it’s own standalone episode and it was a beautiful piece. Marnie may be one of the most annoying characters in the series, but in “The Panic in Central Park” she was all of us. We’ve all had that scenario – some version of it, sometimes shorter or longer or more fun or less fun than what Marnie had, but we all got to the same theme at the very end of it.
  • Our Twenties: How We’re Doing – “Be good to yourself” – a friend once advised me. Too many times in a year, I find myself complaining about how I don’t have this or don’t have that. How annoying for those around me that have to listen to this! The truth is, your 20’s aren’t easy. They were never supposed to be so it’s important for us to cut ourselves some slack. Earlier in 2016, I wrote about my New Year’s resolutions. This post though was sort of like our midpoint review. Initially this started out as a mini-project with Casper, but I ended up actually enjoying this more than I thought I would and had a lot of fun with it.
  • Aging and Alone in Manhattan’s Chinatown – I have a thing for pieces that remind me of my sweet Grandma Ruby. This profile by Mantai Chow truly captured a look into the life of an elderly living in Chinatown. I remember watching this video and thinking back to how I never worried about those that lived there because they had what I believed to be a strong community. In reality though, it seems much more lonelier than I thought. These individuals are more brave than I could ever be especially this woman profiled. Hearing her story was one of the highlights in Yow Yow’s 2016.

  • Let’s Talk About New York! – We made it to 12 posts! With all the trips we took this year, how could we not include our favorite one? It took me 26 years to get to New York, but I couldn’t have asked for a better traveling partner and tour guide. Mandi and I took the next step in our friendship and explored New York City together. She was a pro – obviously having done grad school there and me? Well, I could barely have a successful run on the subway without having a mini freak out. There was never a moment for us to stop because we were constantly on the move. And even though we had made a very packed itinerary for our trip, we only ended up doing half the things we were supposed to. I guess that just means we have to go back.

Yow Yow’s Top 10 Posts of 2016

If only the posts I wrote in the month of December were written earlier…right? December is always the month when I have the most time to write posts, but that doesn’t seem to count for too much! Actually I have really enjoyed sharing my top 10 posts over the last couple of years on Yow Yow! because even as I work on the post, it ends up being a surprise to me! All the time, I’m wrong about what I think will do well or will be stunned when something I wrote that I didn’t spend too much time on goes viral. Every. Time!

This year, we finished out Wedding Wednesdays with Mandi as she finally got married in September! However, her and I are both planning on writing one more post to conclude things. Still, her series continued to do really well in 2016 and you’ll see that reflected in the rankings below:

With that, here are our top 10 posts from the year 2016:

  1. Wedding Wednesdays – Engagement Shoot Adventure
  2. Is It Time To Make A Move? (I know…we’re a tease!)
  3. We’re Not Moving to Squarespace
  4. Wedding Wednesdays – “It’s a Fritz Bernaise”
  5. Wedding Wednesdays – You’re Invited!

Every year, this list just keeps getting easier and easier for us to make. S/O to Spotify for curating a playlist for us that captures the top songs we listened to in 2016. I was going to say that now, instead of having to go through all my seasonal playlists, I can just go through one, but if you know me, then you know I’m going to do my due diligence and scan through everything. There’s a couple of differences between this year and last year’s list though. First, it’s not in the order of which songs I was introduced to first the way we’ve always done it. If I’m correct, Spotify arranged it by play count which makes sense, but I’m also not 100% sure that is true either. Secondly, I created a playlist last year that featured all of the songs on this list and that was fun for us! Spotify’s playlist this year though includes 101 songs… and we’re only going to include 60 on this list. I’ll still share the playlist at the end that Spotify created, but it’s not totally on par with our list because I think Spotify missed a few favorites. In fact, I think Spotify played favorites to those that were more mainstream tracks!
